ORANGEBURG, S.C. (March 30, 2024)--Mia Ewell went 2-for-3 with a RBI and scored a game-high two runs to lead visiting Morgan State past South Carolina State, 5-1 on Saturday afternoon at Lady Bulldog Softball Field.
With the win, Morgan State completed the three-game Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) series sweep and improved to 19-13, 8-1 MEAC. The Lady Bulldogs dropped to 4-19, 2-7 MEAC.
Morgan State broke a scoreless game with three runs in the fourth inning. Gianna Ettore reached on an error at third base, which allowed Chandler Mitchell to score the first run of the game. Ewell, who singled to score Cassie White, later scored on a groundout hit by Melissa Paz for the 3-0 advantage.
The host Lady Bulldogs got a run back in the fifth when Amarie Gist grounded out on a bunt, which scored Kaylah Leslie and cut the Morgan led to 3-1.
Morgan State got the run back in the sixth inning when Anaya Hunte reached on a fielder's choice to score Ewell. The Lady Bears closed out the scoring with their fifth and final run coming in the seventh inning when Ellie Bostedt flied out to left field to score Amber Rivas.
Victoria Fletcher finished 2-for-3 with a walk and Rivas was 2-for-4 with a run. Bostedt picked up the win for the Lady Bears and improved to 4-3 and pitched her third complete game. She would go the distance allowing a run on two hits, while striking out four in 7.0 innings. Morgan State finished the game with nine stolen bases, two each by Rivas and Mitchell.
S.C. State was led by Leslie, who scored the lone run and went 2-for-3 at the plate to record both of the Lady Bulldogs hits in the game.
Morgan State returns home on Saturday, April 6 to host North Carolina Central in a MEAC doubleheader at Lois T. Murray Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m., followed by a 3 p.m. Game 2 start. The three-game series will conclude with a single game on Sunday at noon.
