NCCU Uses Strong Fourth Quarter to Pull Away From Delaware State

Norfolk, VA—North Carolina Central University used an 18-4 run to start the fourth quarter to pull away to a 66-56 win over Delaware State in the quarterfinal round of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament at the Norfolk Scope Arena.  The Eagles (17-14), the number 3 seed, advances to the semifinal round against Howard University, the Number 2 seed, on Friday at 2 pm.

The game was a nip and tuck affair as there were seven ties and four lead changes.  The Eagles led 14-12 at the end of end of one and from there, it was a 30-all tied at intermission.  Using the scoring of Denijsha Wilson, Delaware State managed a 46-42 lead at the end of three.

Then the Eagles took over, embarking on the run that saw them come from behind and open a 60-50 lead at the 2:30 mark.  The run was sparked by Kumeira Burks, and Ariya Finger who accounted for 12 of the Eagles 18 points.

The Hornets struggled to capitalize in the fourth, as they shot 3 of 13 from the field.  The Eagles connected on eight of fourteen in the frame, including three of six from three.

Burke led NCCU 13 points, while finger finished with a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds and Morgan Callahan with 9 points and 12 rebounds.

The Hornets (8-21) was led by Brooks and Wilson with 16 points each and Deyonce Thompson with 11 points.
NCCU will advance to the semi-finals and take on the Bison.  During the regular season, Central swept Howard this season, with both games going into overtime.
