NORFOLK, Va., Feb. 8, 2024 — Morgan State senior Mikeal Carpenter was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men’s Tennis Player of the Week, presented by Coca-Cola, the conference office announced today. Howard University junior Nadia Pegram was named Women’s Tennis Player while Bison teammate Imani Jean earned Rookie of the Week honors.
Carpenter (Sr., Suitland, Md.) helped the Bears defeat the Pirates from Hampton University 5-2 in their first match of the season. Carpenter won at No. 3 singles defeating Daniel Flynn 6-4, 6-3. In doubles action, Carpenter and teammate Niles Rachal fell in a close 6-4 match at the No. 1 spot to Hampton’s Flynn/Armbrister duo.
Pegram (Jr., Naples, Fla.) earned her first singles win of the season, defeating Navy’s Manci Pal 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 4 spot in singles action and grabbed a 6-4 victory in doubles play with teammate Imani Jean.
Jean (Fr., Brooklyn, N.Y.) knocked off Navy’s Julia Lee in three sets at No. 6 singles, while securing a 6-4 victory in doubles play with Nadia Pegram.
Other Top Performers
Candice Bernier (North Carolina Central) went 1-1 in both singles and doubles competitions with both wins coming in the match against Radford.
Patricia Palencia (North Carolina Central) earned her first career collegiate victory in the match against Radford. The freshman won her singles match 6-1, 6-3, and teamed up with Candice Bernier to defeat their opponents in doubles 6-4.
