Maryland Eastern Shore 73, Coppin State 51 

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The Hawks defeated the Eagles of Coppin State in a MEAC Monday night battle that saw UMES win 73-51. 

Maryland Eastern Shore held Coppin State to just 21 points in the first half while doubling their first score putting up 42 on the board. The second half saw a different Eagles team come out of the locker room as the scores were nearly equal in the second half with UMES leading by one point in the third (19-18) and the teams scored the same number of points (12) in the fourth. 

Only two Hawks recorded double digits in the game with Lya Thomas tallying 13 and Ja’la Bannerman adding 12. Ten of the thirteen UMES players recorded at least one basket.  

Coppin State was led by Faith Blackstone with 16 points going 7-of-10 from the free throw line. Mossi Staples tallied 12 points while Laila Lawrence posted a double-double with 10 points and rebounds.

Norfolk State 72, North Carolina Central 44 

NORFOLK, Va. - After trailing in the first quarter, the Spartans bounced back in the remaining three periods to claim a 28-point victory over the Eagles of N.C. Central.  

North Carolina Central led the first quarter 13-11 but Norfolk State answered in the second quarter by holding N.C. Central to only eight points while scoring 16 of their own to lead 27-21 at the break. NSU continued their momentum into the third and fourth quarters scoring 25 and 20 points respectively while holding NCCU to just 23 total points in the second half. 

Diamond Johnson led the Spartans with 20 points while Kierra Wheeler added 14 points and recorded nine rebounds. The rookies Da’Brya Clark and Anjanae Richardson joined the pair of juniors in double figures with 11 and 10 points respectively. 

NCCU was led by Morgan Callahan with 17 points while Aniya Finger joined her as the only other Eagle in double digits with 14 points.

Howard 69, South Carolina State 51 

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Two extremes bookended the contest between the Bulldogs and Bison in Washington, D.C. Howard emerged the victors holding off South Carolina State for the 69-51 win.  

Howard opened the game on a strong foot taking a 26-2 lead. South Carolina closed the gap a little in the second quarter after going on a 17-12 run that put the score at 38-19 at the half. The Bison added another 20+ points putting 27 on the scoreboard while holding the Bulldogs to 12 third quarter points. SCSU put up one final hurray going on a 20-4 run in the fourth quarter but the rally was too little too late as Howard claimed the 69-51 win.  

A trio of Bison scored in double digits led by Tyana Walker with 14 points. Marissa Steel added 12 points after going 10-of-14 from the free throw line. Iyanna Warren contributed 10 points in the win. 

Morgan Beacham led the Bulldogs with 15 points while Jayah Hicks joined her in double figures with 11 points.
