WASHINGTON, D.C. (Nov. 27, 2024--Jael Butler recorded a double-double with a team-high 12 points and a game-high 10 rebounds, but it wasn't enough as host George Washington held off Morgan State, 52-47 on Wednesday afternoon at the Charles E. Smith Center.
 
With the win, George Washington (5-2) has now won three straight over Morgan State to take a 5-4 lead in the series. The Revolutionaries improved to 5-0 at home this season, while Morgan State (4-6), which has dropped its last three contests, fell to 0-6 on the road.
 
The Lady Bears' bench scored 30 of the team's 47 points with Jala Bannerman leading the way with 10 points, while Michaela Bogans finished with eight points and added game highs in steals (3) and assists (4).
 
Trailing 23-20 at the intermission, the Lady Bears came out in the third period and used a 12-7 spurt to take their first lead of the game. Machaela Bogans capped off the run with a three-pointer to give the guests a 32-30 lead.
 
Morgan's lead would be short-lived, as GW used a 14-2 run, including the last 10 points of the third period to give the Revolutionaries a 44-34 advantage heading into the fourth period.
 
GW maintained a 10-point cushion and held a 50-40 lead with 4:34 remaining in the game. Morgan had one final gasp, as Bannerman knocked down two free throws from an intentional foul called on GW at the 2:57 mark, to cut the deficit to 50-47.
 
Morgan State had multiple chances to draw closer, but was unable to capitalize. GW's Makayla Andrews put the game away when she hit two free throws with 11.9 seconds left.
 
Andrews finished with a game-high 16 points and had five rebounds, while Sara Lewis added 10 points for GW.
 
The Revolutionaries finished the game shooting 14-of-17 (82%) from the free throw line, while Morgan State shot 8-of-14 (57%) from the line. GW also held a 41-28 rebounding advantage over the Lady Bears. Morgan State forced 24 GW turnovers and scored 20 points off the turnovers.
 
Morgan State will be off until Thursday, Dec. 5, when it travels to Fairfield, Conn. to take on Sacred Heart at 7 p.m.
