No. 3 Delaware State upsets No. 2 Coppin State in three sets to advance to MEAC Championship match

DOVER, Del., November 23, 2024 - The No. 3 Delaware State Hornets defeated the No. 2 Coppin State Eagles in three sets on Saturday night in front of a raucous crowd to advance to the MEAC Championship match Sunday night against No. 1 Howard.

Coppin State came out of the gate taking an 8-2 lead in the match. The Eagles led 14-7 before going on an 11-3 rally to take a one-point lead, 18-17. CSU scored four to take a 21-18 lead but DSU closed the set on a 9-4 stretch to win 27-25.

The Eagles opened set two in a similar fashion taking a 6-2 lead. DSU answered with an 8-3 run to go up 10-9. The squads went serve for serve throughout the remainder of the set with the Hornets holding on to a narrow lead claiming the 25-22 win. 

Like the first two sets, Coppin State jumped out to a 6-1 lead. Delaware State responded with an 11-3 rally taking a 12-9 lead. The Hornets continued to pull away going up 18-12 before closing out the set on a 7-6 run to win the set 25-18 and the match in three sets. 

Delaware State will take on the top-seeded Bison of Howard University at 8:30 PM in the MEAC Championship game which will air live on ESPNU.
