DOVER, Del., Nov. 22, 2024 - The No. 5 Hawks of Maryland Eastern Shore defeated the No. 4 Spartans of Norfolk State to advance to the semifinal match against top-seeded Howard on Saturday, Nov. 23, at 5:30 P.M. UMES won in four sets, 25-21, 23-25, 25-8, 25-12.

Ranyla Griggs led Maryland Eastern Shore with 14 kills while Lyric Snowden added 12. Anisa Dorlouis registered 36 assists, 15 digs and two service aces. Libero Isil Yilmaz paced the backline with 20 digs, three assists and two aces.
Gabrielle Gilbert paced the Norfolk State attack with 14 kills while Sydney McCree tallied 27 assists and Lily Rose-Pichon led with 22 digs.
Norfolk State opened the match on a 7-3 run before Maryland Eastern Shore scored five in a row, taking a one-point lead, 8-7. The teams went back and forth through the middle of set one with the score evening up 11 times before UMES took the lead to secure the win, 25-21. The Hawks closed out set one on a six-point rally complements of two kills, one block and three Spartan errors.
UMES carried the momentum from set one into set two taking an early 6-1 lead. NSU pulled within two points, 6-4, before UMES put down back-to-back points to go up by four. Norfolk State battled back to trail by one, 11-10, but Maryland Eastern Shore went on a 5-2 run to reclaim a four-point lead, 16-12. The Spartans dug deep to even the score at 18 all following a 6-2 run of their own. The score tied up twice more before Norfolk State closed out the set on a 5-2 run to win 25-23.
After opening set third set trading serve receives, the Hawks went on a 17-0 rally taking a commanding lead, 19-3.NSU won five of the next seven serves before UMES closed out the set on a 4-0 run to win 25-8.
The teams were neck and neck through the early serves sitting tied at five each. UMES went on an 8-1 run taking a 13-6 advantage gave up just six points the remainder of the set closing out the game on 12-6 rally to win in four sets.
The Hawks will face the top-seeded Bison of Howard University on Saturday, Nov. 23 at 5:30 PM in the semifinals of the 2024 MEAC Volleyball Championship Tournament.
