MEAC Announces Weekly Women’s Basketball Honors

NORFOLK, Va., Nov. 12, 2024 – Norfolk State guard Diamond Johnson was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Week, presented by Coca-Cola. Howard's freshman guard Saniyah King was named Rookie of the Week, while Norfolk States's senior forward Kierra Wheeler earned Defensive Player of the Week honors, respectively.

Johnson (G, 5-5, Gr., Philadelphia, Pa.) led the MEAC in scoring totaling 60 points over three games. Johnson averaged 20.0 points, 4.3 assists, and 3.0 rebounds while helping Norfolk State record the program's first victory over an SEC opponent in Missouri (57-54).

King (G, 5-7, Fr., Washington, D.C.) averaged 10.3 points, 3.7 assists, 2.0 steals and 1.3 rebounds in a 2-1 finish for the Bison. She recorded 13 points, five assists and two steals in her debut against Florida A&M. King added 14 points, three rebounds, four assists and two steals against George Washington.

Wheeler (F, 6-1, Sr., Minneapolis, Minn.) averaged 12.3 points, 10.0 rebounds and 3.7 blocks across three wins for the Spartans. She posted a double-double over Longwood with 14 points and 12 rebounds and added 14 points and eight rebounds in a victory over Missouri. Wheeler finished the week with 11 total blocks.

  • Laila Lawrence (CSU) registered a double-double against #18 Maryland, leading the team in both points (16) and rebounds (10).
  • Mahogany Cottingham (DSU) averaged 12.7 points and 2.7 steals while shooting 37 percent from beyond the arc in the Hornets first three games.
  • Ericka Huggins (DSU) posted a double-double in the Hornets season open victory with 11 points and 12 rebounds against Georgian Court.
  • Destiny Howell (HU) registered 53 points and 10 rebounds to help the Bison to a 2-1 finish last week.
  • Zamara Haynes (UMES) scored 41 points and collected 13 defensive boards in three games for the Hawks.
  • Michaela Bogans (MSU) tallied 19 points, six rebounds, six steals and four assists in her first three games as a Lady Bear.
  • Ja'la Bannerman (MSU) averaged 15.6 points, 1.0 rebound, 1.0 assist and 2.7 steals.
  • Laila Fair (MSU) averaged 7.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 1.3 blocks in a 2-1 week for the Bears.
