Two South Carolina State matchups advance to final day of MEAC Tennis Invitational

CARY, N.C. - The women began action at the Cary Tennis Center with singles action that featured one Eagle from North Carolina Central and three Bulldogs from South Carolina State.  

Alejandra Hidalgo Vega (NCCU) and Sofiya Chursina (SCSU) faced off in one of the semifinals matches. After trailing early, Chursina fought back to force a 7-5 tiebreaker in set one and dominated in set two to win 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 knocking Hidalgo Vega from the tournament.  

The second women’s semifinal match featured teammates, Hind Semlali and Nalanda Teixeria da Silva, from S.C. State. The Lady Bulldogs went to a third set with Semlali pulling out the victory, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 advancing to the championship to face her doubles partner, Chursina.  

Doubles play saw a lot of great action including Imani Jean and Nadia Pegram (HOW) defeating the No. 4 seed of Valeria San Miguel Soria and Patricia Palencia (NCCU) in three sets (4-6, 6-3, 10-8). Pegram/Jean went on to face Chursina/Semlali in the women's doubles semifinal and fell in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.  

Howard’s Sifa Butcher and Ava Chambers defeated N.C. Central’s Hidalgo Vega and Mariana Zottoli in another three-set battle (6-3, 3-6, 10-4). The Bison duo fell to Bulldog pair Teodora Vujici and Teixeira da Silva (6-4, 6-2).  

Teammates Chursina/Semlali and Vujici/ Teixeira da Silva will meet on the court around 11 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 6.
