Michel Secures High Score for VUU Tournament MVP

MIDLOTHIAN, Va. – Norfolk State bowler Kiersten Michel earned Most Valuable Player, Highest Score, and All-Tournament laurels at the Virginia Union Invitational from Oct. 25-27 to lead the Spartans to a third place finish.

A sophomore from Chesapeake, Michel finished first overall out of 41 bowlers to garner All-Tournament MVP honors. She totaled 957 pins in five traditional matches to average 191.40 per game.

Senior Jalaya Allen bowled five games, averaging 156.60 whilst sophomore LaShauna Burrus averaged 152.80 across five games as well.

Norfolk State went 2-2 in Baker style matches on Friday, recording victories over Virginia Union (844-705) and Virginia State (922-502), whilst also totaling 834 in a bye. The Spartans fell to Coppin State (855-717) and Howard (851-753).

On Saturday, Norfolk State went 1-3 through three traditional matches. The Spartans got their revenge on Coppin State, defeating the Eagles 915-798 behind a 245 score from Michel. Norfolk State fell to Fayetteville State (816-799), Alabama A&M (885-784) and Howard (852-769).

The Spartans went undefeated on Sunday in Baker match play with a win over CSU (4-2) and a loss to FSU (4-3).
 
The VUU Invitational hosted by Virginia Union brought together eight Historical Black Colleges and Universities between Division I and Division II. Virginia Union, Virginia State, Fayetteville State, and Livingstone College represented Division II, whilst Alabama A&M, Howard, Coppin State and Norfolk State represented Division I.

Alabama A&M garnered first place in the tournament, as Fayetteville State placed second. Fellow Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) schools rounding out behind NSU: Howard (fourth) and Coppin State (fifth).

Virginia Union (sixth), Virginia State (seventh), and Livingstone College (eighth) rounded out the rest of the field.
