MEAC Announces Weekly Football Honors, presented by Coca-Cola

NORFOLK, Va., October 28, 2024 – South Carolina State quarterback Eric Phoenix was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Offensive Player of the Week, presented by Coca-Cola. S.C. State defensive lineman Jayden Broughton earned Defensive Player of the Week honors. Delaware State teammates Mikal Davis and Jestus Johnson were named Rookie and Offensive Lineman of the Week, respectively. Norfolk State’s Jaylen White earned Specialist of the Week accolades.

Phoenix (QB, 6-3, 210, Gr., Savannah, Ga.) completed 85.7 percent (18-of-21) of pass attempts for 341 yards and four touchdowns in the 69-35 win over Delaware State. He also ran four times for 30 yards and one touchdown.

Broughton (DL, 6-2, 235, Sr., Monks Corner, S.C.) collected six solo tackles, all solo, in S.C. State’s victory over Delaware State. He added five tackles for a loss of 17 yards with four quarterback sacks. Broughton added two forced fumbles to top off a strong defensive performance.

Davis (QB, 6-0, 200, Fr., Philadelphia, Pa.) registered 60 yards on 7-of-18 passes including a 15-yard touchdown pass in the Hornets' loss to South Carolina State. Davis added 19 yards on eight carries.

Johnson (OT, 6-3, 300, Gr., Laurel, Md.) recorded a blocking grade of 90 percent with three pancake blocks as the Hornets accumulated 322 offensive yards against South Carolina State.

White (KR, 5-10, 190, RJr., Hampton, Va.) ran back a 97-yard kickoff for a touchdown shifting the momentum in the Spartans' 21-20 victory over Howard.

  • Jayden Sutton (Delaware State) ran 15 times for 153 yards (10.2 avg.) with three touchdowns including a long of 72 yards.
  • Jaydon Mifflin (Delaware State) recorded three solo tackles with one forced fumble.
  • Nate Wilson (Delaware State) tallied 270 yards on six punts (45.0 avg.) with a long of 57 yards and two punts over 50 yards. Wilson added six kickoffs totaling 280 yards (46.7 avg.) and was 4-of-4 on extra point attempts.
  • Ja’Shawn Scroggins (Howard) produced 268 yards of total offense, 159 passing and 109 rushing, with two total TDs at Norfolk State.
  • Terrance Hollon (Howard) collected eight tackles, two solo, against Norfolk State.
  • Elijah Williams (Morgan State) registered four tackles, three solo, including two tackles for a loss, both quarterback sacks, totaling 22 yards.
  • Kevon King (Norfolk State) ran 17 times for 78 yards with one touchdown.
  • AJ Richardson (Norfolk State) amassed 14 tackles in the Spartans one-point win over Howard.
  • J’Mari Taylor (N.C. Central) amassed 196 yards on 26 carries with one touchdown. He added 34 yards on five catches in the Eagles win over Morgan State.
  • Thomas Johnson (N.C. Central) collected six tackles, three solo, with three sacks of 25 yards lost.
  • Kaleb Robison (N.C. Central) recorded his first collegiate field goal on a 21-yard kick to aid in the Eagles' win over MSU.  
  • Juan Velarde (N.C. Central) tallied 175 yards on three punts (58.3 avg.) with two touchbacks including a career-long 70-yard punt.
