MEAC Announces Weekly Women’s Basketball Honors, presented by Coca-Cola

NORFOLK, Virginia, Jan. 31, 2024 – Delaware State’s senior guard Ja-Naiah Perkins-Jackson was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Offensive Player of the Week, presented by Coca-Cola.  Howard guard Tyana Walker was named Rookie of the Week, while Coppin State forward Laila Lawrence earned Defensive Player of the Week honors, respectively. 

Perkins-Jackson (G, Sr., 5-5, Wilmington, Del.) averaged 19.0 points with 2.0 rebounds, 1.0 assists and 2.0 steals through two games for Delaware State. Perkins-Jackson recorded 23 points shooting 77.8 percent (7-of-9) from the field, 62.5 percent (5-of-8) from the free throw line and a perfect 4-of-4 from three-point range in the Hornets 61-49 win over South Carolina State. She added 15 points, three rebounds, three steals, and one assist in the matchup against N.C. Central. On the week she shot 50.0 percent from the field (11-of-22), 75.0 percent from three-point range (6-of-8), 71.4 percent from the charity stripe (10-of-14). 

Walker (G, Fr., 5-9, Leawood, Kansas) posted back-to-back double-digit games producing her fifth in a row and 11th overall on the season. Walker helped the Bison defeat the Bears of Morgan State 54-51 behind 10 points and three steals. She followed with a 13-point game in the loss to Coppin State. 

Lawrence (F, 6-2, Jr., Lewisville, Texas) averaged 16.0 points to go with 9.0 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 1.5 steals and 2.0 blocks through two games for the Eagles. In the game against Norfolk State, Lawrence recorded 10 points and five rebounds with two assists and one steal. She followed with her eighth double-double of the season in the 63-58 victory over Howard with 22 points and 13 rebounds, including 11 defensive boards, and four blocks. 

Other Top Performers 

  • Kaiya Creek (Howard) recorded a season-high 22 points in the game against Coppin State.
  • Nile Miller (Howard) tallied a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds in the Bison victory over the Bears.
  • Mahogany Lester (Maryland Eastern Shore) averaged 17.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 2.5 steals for the Hawks. She collected 20 points in the three-point loss to Howard.
  • Anjanae Richardson (Norfolk State) totaled 12 points, six rebounds, two assists, and three steals in two games for NSU.
  • Kierra Wheeler (Norfolk State) averaged 10.5 rebounds to go with 9.5 points, 2.5 assists, 2.5 steals and 2.0 blocks through two games for the Spartans. She recorded her eighth double-double of the season with 14 points and 12 rebounds against CSU.
  • Diamond Johnson (Norfolk State) averaged 20.5 points with 5.0 rebounds, 1.0 assists and 2.5 steals through two games for Norfolk State.
  • Laila Fair (Morgan State) recorded 17 points with eight rebounds and two blocks to lead Morgan State against Howard.
  • Amari Smith (Morgan State) averaged 10.0 points with 4.5 rebounds over a pair of games for Morgan State.
  • Tyshonne Tollie (Delaware State) was one rebound shy of a double-double in the 64-58 loss to North Carolina Central with 16 points and nine rebounds.
