MEAC Announces Weekly Women’s Basketball Honors, presented by Coca-Cola

NORFOLK, Virginia, Jan. 25, 2024 – Norfolk State's junior guard Diamond Johnson was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Offensive Player of the Week, presented by Coca-Cola. Howard guard Tyana Walker was named Rookie of the Week, while Spartan forward Kierra Wheeler earned Defensive Player of the Week honors, respectively.

Johnson (G, Jr., 5-5, Philadelphia, Penn.) established a new career-high of 29 points in Norfolk State's 99-43 win against Mary Washington. She added four rebounds, four assists, and three steals against the Eagles. In the Spartans game against Howard, Johnson contributed 16 points, with three rebounds and two steals.

Walker (G, Fr., 5-9, Leawood, Kansas) recorded a new career-high 24 points in the 73-60 Bison win over the Spartans to move to 2-1 in MEAC action. She also collected five rebounds, one assist, and one steal while shooting 60.0 percent from the field (9-of-15) and behind the three-point arc (6-of-10).

Wheeler (F, Jr., 6-1, Minneapolis, Minn.) averaged 20.5 points and 7.0 rebounds with 2.5 assists, 5.5 steals and 3.5 blocks through two games for the Spartans. She led Norfolk State with 21 points, three rebounds, four steals, one assist and one block against Howard. Wheeler followed with 20 points and 11 rebounds in the 99-43 win against Mary Washington to go with four assists, seven steals, and six blocks.

  • Faith Blackstone (Coppin State) led the Eagles with 16 points and five rebounds while also adding two assists and two steals in the win against Morgan State.
  • Laila Lawrence (Coppin State) collected a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds along with two blocks in the win over Morgan State.
  • Aniya Finger (North Carolina Central) averaged 15.0 points with 5.5 rebounds, 0.5 steals, and 0.5 blocks over two games for N.C. Central, including 19 points against S.C. State.
  • Kyla Bryant (North Carolina Central) averaged 14.0 points with 5.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists, 3.0 steals, and 0.5 blocks over two games for NCCU.
  • Morgan Callahan (North Carolina Central) totaled 29 points and 17 rebounds over two games for the Eagles including an 18-point, 12-rebounds, eight-assist performance against North Carolina Wesleyan.
  • Mya Thomas (Maryland Eastern Shore) recorded a team-high 12 points in the 76-45 win against Delaware State while adding four rebounds, two assists and one steal.
  • Mahogany Lester (Maryland Eastern Shore) led the hawks with 10 rebounds along with three points and one block against Delaware State.
  • Nile Miller (Howard) recorded 11 rebounds to go along with eight points in the 73-60 Bison victory over the Spartans.
  • Da'Brya Clark (Norfolk State) averaged 7.0 points, 3.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 1.0 steals through two games for NSU.
  • Laila Fair (Morgan State) scored 13 points with six rebounds and five blocks to lead MSU against CSU.
  • Tamaria Rumph (Morgan State) tied with Fair to lead the Bears with 13 points while adding five rebounds, four assists, and one steal against Coppin State.
  • Naomi Zulueta (Delaware State) posted six points and seven rebounds with one steal against UMES.
  • Kiarra MceIrath (Delaware State) led the Hornets with 10 points against Maryland Eastern Shore.
