WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Bison defense worked their magic to shut down the Spartan offense holding the Green and Gold to just 39 percent shooting percentage from the field en route to a 73-60 victory.
Howard came out of the gate on an 8-0 run taking control of the game from the get-go. Norfolk State went on a 12-6 run pulling within two points, 14-12, with three and a half minutes to play in the opening quarter. HU put the stop on NSU’s run closing out the quarter on an 8-4 run sending the teams into the second quarter with the score at 22-16.
The Bison opened a 14-point lead, 34-20, by the 4:54 mark of the second quarter after going on a 12-4 run to start the second. The Spartans hit a dry spell missing five shots with multiple fouls and turnovers against NSU while Howard took a 16-point lead into halftime, 41-25.
Norfolk State closed the gap to 12 points, 43-31, after opening the third on a 6-2 run, however, Howard maintained the lead 52-39 heading into the final quarter. The Bison increased their lead to 20 points in the fourth quarter and would claim the 13-point win, 73-60, at the final buzzer.
Tyana Walker led the Bison with 24 points, a career-high, shot 9-of-15 in the game and went 6-of-10 from three-point range. Kaiya Creek joined Walker in double digits with 15 points, four assists, and three steals. Nile Miller led all players with 11 rebounds to go with eight points.
Kierra Wheeler and Diamond Johnson led Norfolk State with 16 and 13 points respectively.

Coppin State 67, Morgan State 47
BALTIMORE, Md. - The Eagles of Coppin State claimed possession of the top spot in the MEAC women’s basketball standings after defeating Morgan State 67-47. A big second half push from Coppin State improved their record to 5-11 overall and 3-0 in the MEAC.
The Bears found the scoreboard first but the Eagles quickly responded and pulled ahead taking a12-5 lead just three and a half minutes into the game. Morgan State chipped away at the Coppin State lead to pull within one point, 14-13, with 71 seconds remaining in the first quarter. A three from Angel Jones and a pair of free throws from Faith Blackstone put CSU up 19-13 heading into the second quarter.
Morgan State used the opening three and a half minutes to cut into Coppin State’s lead evening the score at 22 points each with 6:25 remaining on the clock. The Bears opened a five-point lead, 29-24, on a layup from Joelle Johnson before the Eagles closed the gap to two, 29-27 heading into halftime.
MSU came out of the break on a 6-0 run to lead 35-27 with 7:25 on the clock, but CSU answered with a 15-3 rally to close out the quarter taking a 42-38 lead into the fourth.
The Eagles added eight more points to their total before the Bears would score again as the score sat at 50-38 with 7:42 remaining in regulation. Morgan State managed to score nine points in the remaining minutes while Coppin State closed the game on a 17-point run to win by 20 points, 67-47.
Faith Blackstone sat at the top of the leader board for CSU with 16 points while teammate Laila Lawrence was just two points behind with 14 in the game to go with her 10 rebounds for a double-double, her seventh of the season. Tyler Gray and Tiffany Hammond added 13 and 10 points respectively.
Laila Fair and Tamaria Rumph both led Morgan State with 13 points each. Joelle Johnson was the last Bear in double digits with 12 points.

Maryland Eastern Shore 76, Delaware State 45
DOVER, Del. - The Hawks of Maryland Eastern Shore dominated the Hornets of Delaware State on rivalry weekend picking up their first MEAC win 76-45.
The Hawks led from the get-go opening the game on a 5-0 run. The Hornets were held to three points for most of the first quarter, while Maryland Eastern Shore held a 20-3 lead with 3:36 left in the first. DSU put up five points in the final minutes of the first quarter as the score sat at 25-8 heading into the second period.
The Hawks obtained a 20-point lead shortly after the start of the second quarter and held on to that advantage throughout the quarter as UMES held DSU to only nine points in the period. Maryland Eastern Shore led 46-17 at halftime.
UMES continued their momentum from the first half into the second half as the team held a 40-point advantage at the end of the third, 63-23. Delaware State nearly doubled their score in the fourth quarter going on a 22-13 run throughout the final ten minutes of action, but the surge came too late as Maryland Eastern Shore claimed the 31-point victory, 76-45, picking up their first MEAC win of the season.
Mya Thomas led the Hawks with 12 points while teammates Zamara Haynes and Ja’la Bannerman both contributed 11 points apiece. Lainey Allen was the last Hawk in double digits with 10 points on her stat line while Mahogany Lester pulled down 10 boards.
DSU’s only player in double figures was Kiarra MceIrath with 10 points in the game.

North Carolina Central 75, South Carolina State 61
ORANGEBURG, S.C. - North Carolina Central improved to 2-1 in the MEAC women’s basketball standings after picking up a road win over South Carolina State 75-61 on Saturday afternoon.
N.C. Central got out to a 12-4 lead and increased the advantage to 20-8 as the clock ticked under five minutes in the first quarter. S.C. State closed out the quarter on a 6-4 run heading into the second quarter with the score sitting at 24-14.
The Bulldogs came as close as six points, trailing 26-20 and 28-22, before the Eagles went on a 12-4 run to close out the half leading 40-26.
South Carolina State came out of the break to add 21 points to their score in the third while holding North Carolina Central to 17 points, putting the score at 57-47 with the Eagles holding the lead.
NCCU outscored SCSU in the fourth quarter 18-14 to claim the victory 75-61.
Aniya Finger led the Eagles with 19 points and was two rebounds shy of a double-double. Kimia Carter added 12 points while both Kyla Bryant and Morgan Callahan each contributed 11 points.
For the Bulldogs both Morgan Beacham and Taniya McGowan recorded 11 points to lead the way while Jordan Releford rounded out the top scorers with 10 points.
