MEAC Announces Weekly Volleyball Honors, presented by Coca-Cola

NORFOLK, Va., Sept. 11, 2023Maryland Eastern Shore graduate student rightside Derionah Abner was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Week, presented by Coca-Cola, the conference announced. Norfolk State’s Gabrielle Gilbert was named Rookie of the Week, while Coppin State redshirt senior Andrea Tsvetanova was named Setter of the Week, and teammate Ashley Roman earned Defensive Player of the Week honors.
 
Abner (Gr., RS, Orlando, Fla.) averaged 4.14 kills per set and hit .344 over the weekend in leading the Hawks to wins over Gardner-Webb and Quinnipiac. She opened with 18 kills, seven digs, four total blocks, and an ace against Gardner-Webb, hitting .368, before turning in an 11-kill, 6-dig, 1-block, 1-ace effort against Quinnipiac.
 
Gilbert (Fr., OH, Indianapolis, Ind.) averaged 3.38 kills per set and hit .311 across three matches for the weekend. She dropped a career-best 22 kills in a five-set win over UNC Wilmington, hitting .380, after recording her best overall match of the weekend against Alabama State: 16 kills, .517 hitting, three digs, two aces, and a block.
 
Tsvetanova (r-Sr., S, Sofia, Bulgaria) was named to the Penn All-Tournament Team after leading the Eagles to three more wins to extend their overall win streak to seven, averaging 12.3 assists per set. She recorded 38 assists each in sweeps of Lafayette and Penn, and she had 35 in a three-set win over Loyola (Md.).
 
Roman (r-Sr., L, Isabela, Puerto Rico) averaged 6.1 digs per set this past week, becoming the MEAC’s all-time leader in career digs with an 18-dig performance against Loyola (Md.). She added 22 digs against Lafayette and 15 against Penn. Through this past weekend, Roman has 2,104 career digs.
 
Other Top Performers
Coco Figueroa (Coppin State) recorded 10 digs against Lafayette.
 
Ammaarah Williams (Coppin State) racked up 14 kills against Latafyette and 12 against Penn.
 
Alondra Maldonado (Delaware State) recorded a double-double (16 kills, 10 digs) against Binghamton.
 
Ella Sanders (Delaware State) also recorded a double-double against Binghamton, racking up 15 kills and 13 digs.
 
Kayla Diaz (Howard) racked up 38 assists and nine digs against UMBC, before adding 33 assists against Maryland.
 
Cimone Woodard (Howard) racked up eight kills and five blocks against UMBC, after recording eight kills on a .667 hitting percentage against Virginia.
 
Anisa Dorlouis (Maryland Eastern Shore) recorded a double-double (20 assists, 10 digs) against Gardner-Webb.
 
Valeria Matias (Maryland Eastern Shore) had 22 digs against Gardner-Webb and 11 against Quinnipiac.
 
Romina Vacca (Maryland Eastern Shore) racked up 31 assists against Gardner-Webb.
 
Makila Billingsley (Morgan State) recorded 14 kills and hit .258 against Columbia.
 
Trinity Carruthers (Morgan State) had her best match of the weekend against Columbia, with 35 assists, eight digs, three blocks, and three aces.
 
Mya Karrick (Morgan State) had seven kills and two blocks in a win over Manhattan.
 
Alyssa Sampson (Morgan State) had 19 digs against Columbia and 13 against Manhattan.
 
Sydney McCree (Norfolk State) had two 40-assist matches: 40 against Alabama State and 44 against UNC Wilmington.
 
Fabiana Mucciola (Norfolk State) racked up 21 digs against Alabama State and 17 against UNC Wilmington.
 
Shonte Seale (Norfolk State) recoded 11 kills each against East Carolina and Alabama State.
 
Bella Dearinger (North Carolina Central) racked up 44 assists against Campbell.
 
Kamren Harper (North Carolina Central) was named to the Elon Volley for Unity All-Tournament Team after recording 18 kills against Campbell and 11 against Western Carolina.
 
Loren Johnson (North Carolina Central) averaged 4.67 digs per set in three matches and recorded a season-high 25 digs against Western Carolina.
