Howard Advances For a Chance to Play For MEAC Championship

Howard scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to eliminate Maryland Eastern Shore 5-1 on Friday in the 2023 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Softball Championship at NSU Softball Field. 

The campaign to win back-to-back MEAC softball championships continues for the Bison, as they will now face the Eagles of Coppin State at 3 p.m., for the opportunity to face North Carolina Central on Saturday in the 2023 championship game. 

Sidney Fletcher got the scoring started in the fifth with a two-run double down the left field line, a ball that scored Kalita Dennis and Alyssa Vasquez. Victoria Brown followed with a base hit up the middle that brought in two more runs, bringing the score to 4-0.

The Bison (20-25) added a run in the sixth with an RBI single from Dennis.

UMES scratched across a run in the seventh on a Howard error, but the rally stopped there. The Hawks ended their season at 14-30.

Vasquez led the way with three hits for the Bison, while Fletcher and Brown each had two RBIs. Mia Gonzales went 6.1 innings in the circle, striking out a pair and scattering three hits.
