Niya Fields / MEAC Softball 5/12/2023 5:11:20 PM Coppin State Advances to MEAC Softball Championship Game Box Score | Updated Bracket | Championship Central NORFOLK, Va., May 12, 2023 – Coppin State scored two runs in the top of the third inning, and that proved to be all the Eagles needed to take down the reigning Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) champion Howard Bison 3-0 on Friday afternoon at NSU Softball Stadium. Coppin State advances to the first MEAC softball championship game in program history and will face the Eagles of North Carolina Central on Saturday at 11 a.m. in a game streamed live on ESPN+. Coppin will need two wins to take the title. Seryna Esparza hit a two-run blast over the left field wall that scored Manaia Fonoti and gave Coppin State a 2-0 lead, which proved to be plenty. The Eagles would add a run in the top of the seventh, when Ava Camarena scored on a single to the right side by Celeste Gonzales. Howard is eliminated from tournament play and finishes the season with a 20-26 record. With the championship game set between N.C. Central and Coppin State, the MEAC will see a new champion since Morgan State won in 2021, with neither team winning before. This will be the first appearance for Coppin State, while N.C.
