Niya Fields / MEAC Softball 5/10/2023 5:17:50 PM Carrizoza Throws Gem as Eagles Advance with 2-1 Win Over Morgan State Box Score | Updated Bracket NORFOLK, Va., May 10, 2023 -- Vanessa Carrizosa allowed just one run while striking out four batters and not allowing a walk as Coppin State held on to take down top seed Morgan State 2-1 on Wednesday afternoon in the 2023 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Softball Championship at the NSU Softball Field. The sixth-seeded Eagles advanced to Thursday’s 6 p.m. contest against the winner of Wednesday’s North Carolina Central-Norfolk State game. The Bears fell into the elimination bracket and will face Maryland Eastern Shore at 12 p.m. on Thursday. Brissaa Alvarado hit her third home run of the season in the top half of the fourth inning to give Coppin State an early 1-0 lead. That lead held until the bottom half of the fifth, when Chandler Mitchell, who came in to run for Aliso Keener, scored on a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 1-1. Avianna Peterson sealed the game in the top of the seventh with a solo home run over the left field fence to give Coppin State the 2-1 win over its crosstown rival. Carrizosa, who picked up her second win of the day, is now 13-12 on the year, and the Eagles as a team are 14-26. Coppin State has won multiple tournament games for the second time ever, and the first time since 2011. Morgan State falls to 24-20 on the season.
