MEAC Announces Weekly Softball Honors, presented by Coca-Cola

NORFOLK, Va., April 24, 2023Howard University graduate student Kalita Dennis has been named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Softball Player of the Week, presented by Coca-Cola, the league announced today. Coppin State’s Celeste Gonzales was named Rookie of the Week, and Coppin State junior Vanessa Carrizosa was named the Pitcher of the Week.
 
Dennis (5-7, Gr., INF, Elk Grove, Calif.) went 10-for-14 (.714) at the plate with nine RBIs and three runs scored in five games this past week, notching four multi-hit games. She went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two doubles in Sunday’s finale against Maryland Eastern Shore, and for the series, she went 7-for-10 at the plate with six RBIs and three runs scored.
 
Gonzales (5-6, Fr., OF, Mo/reno Valley, Calif.) went 6-for-15 (.400) at the plate in five games, driving in three runs and scoring seven times. She had a pair of two-hit games – against Delaware State and Delaware – including a double in each contest. She stole five bases for the week, including three against the Hornets.
 
Carrizosa (5-2, Jr., P/UTL, Moreno Valley, Calif.) went 3-0 for the week, including a win in relief against Delaware State and a five-hit shutout against North Carolina Central. She struck out eight batters in 17.2 innings of work, against just one walk for the week.
 
Other Top Performers
Brissa Alvarado (Coppin State) had a pair of two-hit games – against Delaware State and North Carolina Central – including a 2-for-3, three-RBI contest on Sunday against the Eagles.
 
Amelia Weber (Howard) racked up four hits in the first game against Maryland Eastern Shore, driving in a pair of runs.
 
Ameenah Ballenger (Maryland Eastern Shore) had three multi-hit games for the week, driving in a combined six runs.
 
Jaycee Holt (Maryland Eastern Shore) was 4-for-9 at the plate with four runs scored and two stolen bases against Howard.
 
Yrral Davis (Norfolk State) recorded a pair of two-hit games against Delaware State, including a double and two runs scored in the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader.
 
Alexis Robinson (Norfolk State) gave up just three hits in nine combined innings of work against Delaware State.
