DOVER, Del. – For the first time in program-history, Coppin State's softball team took a series from Delaware State on the road, sweeping a doubleheader from the Hornets on Sunday afternoon. The Eagles now stand at 4-10 in the MEAC while the Hornets fall to 2-11 in league play.
Game 1: Coppin State def. Delaware State, 4-0
Vanessa Carrizosa threw a two-hit shutout while striking out three in the complete game victory.
Dillon Morgan had a pair of hits while freshmen
Celeste Gonzales, Manaia Fonoti, Aniyah Haley and
Ava Camarena all drove in runs.
After three scoreless innings, where Carrizosa gave up both of her hits, Coppin got on the board in the fourth on a sacrifice fly from Haley.
Brissa Alvarado scored on the play after she led off with a double before advancing to third on
Xzylia Maravilla's sacrifice bunt.
Carrizosa retired 13 of the final 14 batters she faced, and she got extra help from her offense with a three-run seventh. Camarena's sacrifice bunt drove in Haley after her leadoff single before Gonzales doubled in Camarena, followed by an RBI single from Fonoti.
Game 2: Coppin State def. Delaware State, 4-2
Celeste Gonzales, Manaia Fonoti and
Brissa Alvarado all had two-hit games with Alvarado also scoring a pair of runs.
Avianna Peterson and
Ava Camarena both had hits while driving in runs as well.
Isabel Tobias and
Vanessa Carrizosa split time in the circle, with Tobias giving up just one run on three hits in the first 3.1 innings while striking out three. Carrizosa received the win while allowing one run on four hits with three strikeouts in the final 3.2 innings.
Coppin got on the board first as Alvarado reached on a throwing error which allowed Fonoti to score from second with two outs.
Tobias threw a 1-2-3 first inning before DSU tied it up in the second, but she settled down for another perfect inning in the third with a pair of strikeouts.
Camarena singled up the middle in the fourth, giving the Eagles a 2-1 lead as Alvarado scored after starting the frame with a single.
DSU threatened in the fourth, but Carrizosa retired the final two batters to keep it a 2-1 ballgame.
Coppin got a run in the sixth as Peterson singled to left, driving in Alvarado, but the Hornets came right back in the sixth with a run of their own, pulling to within, 3-2.
Gonzales provided an insurance run for the Eagles in the seventh with a triple to right field, but scored on the play as the throw from right field was wild.
In their final at-bat, DSU got an infield single, but Carrizosa got a groundout before freezing the final batter to close it out.
