NORFOLK, Va., March 9, 2023 – Aziah Hudson scored a game-high 21 points and Destiny Howell added 18 as Howard University cruised past Delaware State, 67-35 in the quarterfinal round of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Basketball Tournament at the Scope Arena.
The Bison, the No. 3 seed and defending champions, advance to Friday’s semifinal round against Maryland Eastern Shore at 2 p.m.
The Hornets, the No. 6 seed, closed out the season at 7-19 .
A 6-0 junior guard, Howell got the Bison going, scoring eight of her team’s first 10 points. Hudson, a 5-7 graduate from Old Dominion, then got into the act to score eight of the Bison’s next 10 points to give Howard a 22-10 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
“We came out knowing that this is the tournament and that we needed to get off to a good start,” Howell, the MEAC Player of the Year, said. “A lot of my fast start had to do with my teammates and their ability to get me the ball for open shots.”
The deficit increased to 32-17 at the half.
The Hornets, who came into the game with only eight players in uniform, missed several shots and were never able to generate any consistent offense. Howard began to flex in the third quarter as senior forward Brooklynn Fort-Davis and junior guard Kaniyah Harris began emphasizing their presence in the game. The duo each recorded double doubles, Fort Davis with 11 points and 11 rebounds and Harris with 12 rebounds and 12 assists.
“We have some experience, and we don’t focus on the opponents; we just try to play our game and let everything else take care of itself,” Fort-Davis said.
Delaware State got a double-double from senior guard Jessica Martino (14 points, 11 rebounds) and senior guard Alexis Moragne added 10 points.
Howard swept UMES during the season, but their matchups have always been competitive.
“”At this point, we just focus on us and not the opponents,” Bison head coach Ty Grace said.
