VIRGINIA BEACH, Va., March 26, 2023 – Monmouth advanced to the championship final of the 2023 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Bowling Championship Sunday morning at Pinboy’s at the Beach with a 2-1 Mega Match win over UAB.
Sunday’s championship match against two-time defending champion North Carolina A&T State will be at 2 p.m. and will re-air on ESPNU on Monday, April 3 at 6 p.m.
Monmouth opened with a strong overall effort in the traditional game, as four of the five Hawk bowlers rolled at least a 190 in a 937-850 win. Skylar Smith led the way with a 197, while Jamie Phelan bowled a 194 and Sierra Poole turned in a 193 and Jenna Lehrer a 190.
Jamie Krasnigor led the Blazers with a 204.
UAB bounced back in Baker total pinfall, holding a 38-pin edge after the first two games – going 171-157 and 202-178. Monmouth cut the pinfall lead to seven by winning game three, 171-140, but the Blazers closed out 192-181 and 176-144 to win the round 881-831 and force a Baker best-of-seven.
The Baker best-of-seven format was tied 2-2 after some tight, back-and-forth bowling, though Monmouth took control in the fifth game by converting strikes on four of its last five rolls – and eight overall – to win the game 234-195 and take a 3-2 lead.
The next game saw the Hawks roll to a 170-131 win, with Phelan striking out in the 10
th frame to send Monmouth to its second championship match in three seasons. The Hawks will face top seed North Carolina A&T State for their first MEAC title at roughly 2 p.m.
