MEAC Announces Weekly Women’s Basketball Honors, presented by Coca-Cola

NORFOLK, Va., Feb. 7, 2023North Carolina Central redshirt junior guard Kimeira Burks was selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, presented by Coca-Cola, the conference office announced today. North Carolina Central’s Jerni Kiaku was named Rookie of the Week, while Coppin State sophomore guard/forward Jewel Watkins earned Defensive Player of the Week honors.
 
Burks (5-8, r-Jr., G, Chicago, Ill.) dropped a game-high 26 points in the Eagles’ overtime win at Norfolk State, sinking a career-high seven 3-pointers in the process. She was 7-for-12 from distance (58.3%) and 8-for-15 (53.3%) from the floor, while also notching four steals, three rebounds and two assists. Her seventh trey of the night ended up being the go-ahead basket in overtime.
 
Kiaku (5-7, Fr., G, Garner, N.C.) scored 17 points on 8-for-16 shooting (50%) in the Eagles’ overtime win at Norfolk State, while also dishing out three assists.
 
Watkins (5-11, So., G/F, Whitehall, Ohio) racked up 19 rebounds in two games, 14 of which came on the defensive end, while also averaging 3.0 blocked shots per game. She had nine rebounds (seven defensive), three blocks and three steals against South Carolina State, before going for 10 boards (seven defensive), three blocks and a steal against Delaware State.
 
Other Top Performers
Lucia Reos (Coppin State) went for 13 points and four assists against Delaware State.
 
Savannah Brooks (Delaware State) dropped 14 points and added six rebounds against Coppin State.
 
Alexis Moragne (Delaware State) had 14 points on 6-for-12 shooting, including two 3-pointers, against Coppin State.
 
Tyshonne Tollie (Delaware State) grabbed seven rebounds (all on defense) to go along with 13 points, a block and a steal against Coppin State.
 
Gabrielle Johnson (Morgan State) had 11 points, three assists and three steals against South Carolina State.
 
Charlene Shepherd (Morgan State) had 20 points, eight rebounds and two steals against South Carolina State.
 
Camille Downs (Norfolk State) went for 21 points, nine rebounds, five steals and three assists against North Carolina Central.
 
Kierra Wheeler (Norfolk State) grabbed 12 rebounds, blocked three shots and had two steals against North Carolina Central.
 
Morgan Callahan (North Carolina Central) grabbed a career-high 17 rebounds against Norfolk State, to go along with eight points, two steals and two assists.

Nicole Gwynn (South Carolina State) dropped 26 points, hitting five 3-pointers and 10 field goals overall, in a win over Coppin State.
