MEAC Announces Weekly Women’s Basketball Honors, presented by Coca-Cola

NORFOLK, Va., Feb. 28, 2023Norfolk State graduate guard Camille Downs was selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, presented by Coca-Cola, the conference office announced today. Morgan State’s Gabrielle Johnson was named Rookie of the Week, while Howard University senior forward Brooklynn Fort-Davis earned Defensive Player of the Week honors.
 
Downs (5-10, Gr., G, Fredericksburg, Va.) averaged 16.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.5 steals per game this past week, going a combined 12-for-21 (57%) from the floor in helping the Spartans to a pair of wins and the MEAC regular-season title. Her best game came on Monday at North Carolina Central, where she went for 25 points, five rebounds and five assists, while going 9-for-11 from the floor. She added eight points, four rebounds and four steals against South Carolina State.
 
Johnson (5-8, Fr., G, Baltimore, Md.) averaged 13.0 points, 6.0 assists, 3.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals a contest this past week, going a combined 8-for-16 (50%) from the floor. She dropped 21 points against Maryland Eastern Shore to go along with five assists, three rebounds and two steals, going 6-for-8 from the floor, and she dished out another seven assists against Delaware State.
 
Fort-Davis (6-0, Sr., F, Chicago, Ill.) averaged 9.5 rebounds per game this past week, and of her 18 total rebounds, 16 came on the defensive end. She grabbed 12 rebounds (11 defensive) against North Carolina Central, and in Monday’s game against South Carolina State, she added two blocks and two steals.
 
Other Top Performers
Jewel Watkins (Coppin State) recorded a double-double Saturday against Maryland Eastern Shore, going for 19 points and 12 rebounds.
 
Savannah Brooks (Delaware State) recorded a pair of double-digit scoring efforts: 12 points against Coppin State and 11 against Morgan State.
 
Jessica Martino (Delaware State) dropped 17 points on 8-for-12 shooting against Morgan State.
 
Tyshonne Tollie (Delaware State) averaged 8.5 rebounds in two contests, and 14 of her 17 total rebounds were on the defensive end.
 
Destiny Howell (Howard) had 16 points and eight rebounds against North Carolina Central, before adding 14 points against South Carolina State.
 
Nile Miller (Howard) grabbed six rebounds and blocked four shots against North Carolina Central.
 
Kierra Wheeler (Norfolk State) had 19 points, 14 rebounds and three steals against North Carolina Central.
 
Aniya Finger (North Carolina Central) had 17 rebounds and two blocks against Howard, while also recording a double-double (12 points, 12 rebounds) against Norfolk State.
