MEAC Announces Weekly Men’s Basketball Honors, presented by Coca-Cola

NORFOLK, Va., Feb. 21, 2023Coppin State redshirt senior guard Sam Sessoms has been named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, presented by Coca-Cola, the league announced today. Howard University’s Shy Odom was named Rookie of the Week, and North Carolina Central senior guard Eric Boone was announced as the Defensive Player of the Week.
 
Sessoms (6-0, r-Sr., G, Philadelphia, Pa.) averaged 27.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 5.5 assists and 4.0 steals per game this past week, while going a combined 17-for-32 (53%) from the floor. On Saturday, he poured in 37 points against Howard on 16-for-25 shooting – setting the program’s NCAA-era record for most field goals made in a single game – while grabbing seven rebounds, five assists and four steals. In Monday’s win over Norfolk State, he had 17 points, six rebounds, six assists and four steals – going a career-best 15-for-19 from the free throw line.
 
Odom (6-6, Fr., F, Roxbury, Mass.) dropped 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds against Morgan State on nine made field goals, recording his first career double-double on Monday. In Saturday’s win over Coppin State, he had seven points, seven boards, three blocks, two assists and a steal. He was 45% (10-for-22) from the floor for the week.
 
Boone (6-2, Sr., G, Lexington, Ky.) recorded a career-high seven steals in the Eagles’ win over Maryland Eastern Shore, and for the week, he grabbed 12 total rebounds (11 of which came on the defensive end). In the UMES contest, he had nine boards – eight on defense.
 
Other Top Performers
Nendah Tarke (Coppin State) had 17 points and nine rebounds against Howard, before turning in a 19-point, 8-rebound effort against Norfolk State.
 
Kyle Johnson (Delaware State) recorded a double-double against South Carolina State with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
 
Martaz Robinson (Delaware State) dropped 28 points on 10-for-16 shooting against South Carolina State.
 
Elijah Hawkins (Howard) was one assist shy of a double-double against Coppin State, going for 20 points and nine dimes, before turning in a 16-point effort against Morgan State.
 
Dionte Johnson (Maryland Eastern Shore) had eight points, five rebounds, three steals and two assists against South Carolina State.
 
Da’Shawn Phillip (Maryland Eastern Shore) had three steals and two blocks against South Carolina State.
 
Zion Styles (Maryland Eastern Shore) had 22 points, four steals and three rebounds against North Carolina Central.
 
Kris Bankston (Norfolk State) went for 23 points, nine rebounds and five blocks against Morgan State.
 
Justin Wright (North Carolina Central) had 19 points and seven boards against Maryland Eastern Shore, after going for 14 and six against Delaware State.
