DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University senior forward Kris Monroe poured in 22 first-half points to help NCCU sprint to an 85-52 wire-to-wire victory over Coppin State University inside McDougald-McLendon Arena on Monday night.
This is the 240th victory for NCCU head coach LeVelle Moton, passing the legendary two-time Naismith Hall of Fame coach John McLendon, who led the Eagles from 1940-1952 (239-68), for the second spot on NCCU's career wins list. Moton now trails McLendon's successor Floyd Brown, who is NCCU's all-time winningest coach and was at the helm from 1952-1970 (251-194).
Up next, NCCU (12-11, 5-4 MEAC) will travel north to battle Delaware State and Maryland Eastern Shore on Saturday, Feb. 18, and Monday, Feb. 20, respectively.
Howard 78, Maryland Eastern Shore 69
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Howard University men's basketball team protected home court, extending their win streak to eight, after a 78-69 victory over the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) at Burr Gymnasium on Monday night.
Win the win, Howard moved to 16-10 (8-1 MEAC) and remains atop the conference standings. Additionally, the Bison stay unbeaten at home during league play (6-0).
Four Bison reached double figures in scoring, led by sophomore guard Elijah Hawkins with 16 points. The D.C. native also racked up seven boards and six dimes in the win.
Howard will travel to Coppin State Saturday (Feb. 18) to have their second faceoff of the season. Tipoff is slated for 4 p.m. at the Physical Education Complex.
South Carolina State 74, Morgan State 62
ORANGEBURG, S.C. – Justin Wilson had 13 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks and South Carolina State scored 48 points in the paint in a 74-62 upset win over Morgan State on Monday night at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.
Wilson, a transfer from Northern Oklahoma C.C., collected his first double-double of the season as he led the Bulldogs with 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting while also pulling down a game-high 11 rebounds (nine defensive) and posted a season-high five blocked shots.
South Carolina State takes on Maryland Eastern Shore in Princess Anne, Md. on Saturday.
Norfolk State 97, Delaware State 58
NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State men's basketball team extended its win streak to five on Monday night, dominating Delaware State from start to finish in a 97-58 victory. NSU improved to 18-7 on the season, 7-2 in the MEAC.
The 39-point win marked the Spartans' largest-ever margin of victory in a MEAC contest, the previous high also coming against Delaware State in a 93-58 result on Feb. 12, 2017.
The Spartans return to Echols Hall on Saturday, Feb. 18 to face Morgan State for Greek Night and Alumni Weekend at 4 p.m. NSU will be hungry for revenge, falling 77-71 in the foes' first meeting.
