NORFOLK, Va., Feb. 14, 2023—Howard University junior guard Destiny Howell was selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, presented by Coca-Cola, the conference office announced today. Delaware State’s Savannah Brooks was named Rookie of the Week, while Norfolk State graduate guard Camille Downs earned Defensive Player of the Week honors.
Howell (6-0, Jr., G, Queens, N.Y.) averaged 20.0 points and 4.0 assists per game in two Bison wins this past week, shooting a combined 14-for-24 (58%) from the floor and 6-for-9 (67%) from behind the arc. She dropped 25 points on 8-for-14 shooting, hitting all four of her threes, against Maryland Eastern Shore on Monday, and on Saturday, she had 15 points and six assists, going 6-for-10 from the floor, against Delaware State.
Brooks (5-9, Fr., G/F, Taneytown, Md.) averaged 13.5 points and 3.0 steals in two games for the Hornets. She opened with 17 points and four steals against Howard, before adding 10 points, three rebounds and two steals against Norfolk State. For the week, she was a combined 14-for-16 (88%) from the free throw line.
Downs (5-10, Gr., G, Fredericksburg, Va.) averaged 5.0 steals per game for the Spartans in a pair of wins this past week. She opened with six steals against Maryland Eastern Shore, tying her season high, before adding four more in Monday’s win over Delaware State.
Other Top Performers
Jessica Martino (Delaware State) had seven rebounds and a steal against Howard, before adding 11 points against Norfolk State.
Tyshonne Tollie (Delaware State) had 12 points and eight rebounds against Howard.
Krislyn Marsh (Howard) notched six rebounds and two steals against Delaware State, then blocked two shots against Maryland Eastern Shore.
Taylor Addison (Morgan State) had 11 rebounds, five assists and four steals against South Carolina State after a 14-rebound effort against North Carolina Central.
Gabrielle Johnson (Morgan State) scored a season-high 21 points against North Carolina Central, while also grabbing five rebounds and two steals.
Charlene Shepherd (Morgan State) went for 15 points against North Carolina Central and 14 against South Carolina State.
