MEAC Announces Weekly Women’s Basketball Honors, presented by Coca-Cola

NORFOLK, Va., Dec. 20, 2023 - Norfolk State forward Kierra Wheeler was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Offensive Player of the Week, presented by Coca-Cola. North Carolina Central guard Jada Tiggett was named Rookie of the Week, while Coppin State forward Laila Lawrence earned Defensive Player of the Week honors, respectively. 

Wheeler (Jr., F, Minneapolis, Minn.) averaged a double-double for the week with 24 points and 14 rebounds for the Spartans. She was the driving force behind Norfolk State’s overtime 85-71 victory at High Point with 33 points and 17 rebounds while shooting 57.9 percent from the field (11-of-19) and 76.9 percent from the free throw line (10-of-13). Against Auburn, Wheeler led Norfolk State with 15 points and 11 rebounds. 

Lawrence (Jr., F, Lewisville, Texas) recorded a season-high 27 points while adding 10 rebounds with three steals in the Eagles game at Binghamton. She made 11 of 17 field goal attempts (64.7%). 

Tiggett (G/F, 6-2, Fr., Winchester, Calif.) tallied her first collegiate double-double in a road win at UNC Asheville, leading the team with 14 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks. She averaged 12.0 points, 8.5 rebounds and 2.5 blocks through two games for N.C. Central.

Other Top Performers
Nile Miller (Howard) tallied 10 points with five rebounds and six steals against Cincinnati. She followed with 11 rebounds, nine points, and three blocks in the win against Florida Atlantic. 

Joelle Johnson (Morgan State) scored 17 points with nine rebounds for the Bears against Stetson.
