Ashley Roman,
Andrea Tsvetanova and
Geraldyn Palacios have been named to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) NCAA Division I Volleyball Academic All-District Team, it was announced by the organization on Tuesday afternoon. All three were also selected to advance to the national ballot, to be voted on by CSC members and the Academic All-America honorees will be announced on January 9, 2024.
Roman is now a two-time Academic All-District selection while Tsvetanova and Palacios are first time recipients.
A five-time First Team All-MEAC selection and a four-time Defensive Player of the Year honoree, Roman is the MEAC's all-time leader with 2,402 digs. Roman led the league with 458 digs and 4.23 digs/set, helping the Eagles to their first-ever MEAC Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance this season. A senior libero from Isabela, Puerto Rico, Roman added 98 assists and 30 aces this season and finished her career with 455 assists while her 125 career aces are fifth in CSU history. Roman's 2,402 career digs are fourth among all active Division I players.
A Biology major, Roman has organized and participated in numerous community service events, serves as a member of the MEAC Hispanic and Latinx Heritage Committee and founded Latinix Unidos, a club for Hispanic and Latinx students at Coppin State.
Tsvetanova repeated as a First Team All-Conference selection and received MEAC Setter of the Year in 2023 after sharing the honor in 2022. A senior setter from Sofia, Bulgaria, Tsvetanova led the MEAC with 986 assists and 8.96 assists/set while the eagles switched to a 6-2 rotation late in the season. Tsvetanova also led the Nation for the second-straight season in service aces/set (0.65) while ranking second in total aces (72). Tsvetanova added a career-high 46 kills along with 216 digs (1.96/set) and 22 blocks.
In just three seasons, Tsvetanova, a psychology major, is the CSU all-time leader with 237 service aces and 0.69 service aces/set, both of which lead all active players and are the most since the NCAA adopted a 25-point scoring system in 2008. Tsvetanova also ranks second in school history with 3,014 assists and eighth with 745 digs.
Palacios earned First Team All-MEAC recognition after ranking second on the Eagles with 208 kills (1.86/set) on .331 swinging along with 86 blocks (0.77/set). A senior sport management major from Medellin, Colombia, Palacios added 17 aces and 51 digs in her second season at Coppin. Palacios recorded 169 blocks in her CSU career, tying her for seventh in school history while her .326 hitting percentage is the second highest ever at Coppin.
Coppin finished the season with a 27-5 overall record after going 13-1 in the MEAC, recording its third regular season championship in the last four seasons. After sweeping through the conference tournament, the Eagles fell to #1 Pitt in the NCAA Tournament, but set school-records for wins, conference wins, non-conference wins (11), longest winning streak (ten), hitting percentage (.221) and kills/set (12.63).
