MEAC Esports wraps up successful fifth season

NORFOLK, Va. - The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) celebrates the conclusion of a successful fifth season of MEAC Esports as we close out the 2023 calendar year.  

The Howard Bison Esports team was the overall winner of season five accumulating the most points from all games played throughout the fall season. The Bison reclaimed the MEAC Champions Title after losing it last season to the Bears from Morgan State. These two teams have developed quite a rivalry as they have been among the top runners each season.  

Morgan State finished second in the standings with Norfolk State claiming third. Other schools that competed in league play included University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Florida A&M University, and North Carolina Central University. 

Competition began back on October 7 and lasted seven weeks with events occurring on Saturday’s and Sunday’s. Teams competed in a variety of games including Apex Legends, Super Smash Bros., Mario Kart 8 Delux, and Overwatch, with one off tournaments in Brawlhalla, Rocket League, Call of Duty Moden Warfare, Street Fighter 6, and Mortal Kombat 1. 

Throughout the season an Outstanding Gamer of the Week was announced to social media with the honoree earning a $50 prize.

  • Week 4 - Julian Annan-Smith, Howard University Esports 

  • Week 5 - Melvyn Fox, Howard University Esports 

  • Week 6 - Jaden Bennett, Morgan State  

Team championships were played for Overwatch and Apex Legends. The Overwatch teams were made up of five players per team, while Apex Legends were comprised of three players each. Super Smash Bros. and Mario Kart were played as individual championships with an overall individual champion.
