University of South Florida 96, South Carolina State 52 

The Bulls from the University of South Florida defeated the Bulldogs from South Carolina State University 96-52 on Thursday evening. USF utilized a 17-point run to take a 20-point lead over SCSU in the first half and led 47-23 at the half. The Bulls added another 49 points in the second half to claim the win and held the Bulldogs to 29 points in the final 20 minutes of play.  

Mitchel Taylor led SCSU with 11 points going 5-of-9 from the field. Caleb McCarty was the next highest scoring Bulldog with eight points. 

South Carolina State returns to action on Monday, Nov. 13, when they host the Ospreys from the University of North Florida. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 PM in Orangeburg, SC.

Morgan State 100, Cheyney University of Pennsylvania 52 

The Bears of Morgan State claimed a big 100-52 win over the Wolves of Cheyney University of Pennsylvania. After a close first half where the score sat at 42-34 with the Bears leading at the break, Morgan State came out in the second half and walloped the Wolves putting up 58 points to Cheyney’s 18.  

Morgan State had five players score in double figures led by Myles Thompson with 19 points. Wynston Tabbs added 17 points while Amahrie Simpkins and Kamron Hobbs both scored 15 points apiece. Christian Oliver was the last Bear in double-digits with 12 points and was one rebound away from his first double-double of the season. Simpkins added eight rebounds to follow Oliver. 

MSU is back in action again on Sunday, Nov. 12, when they host Penn State Wilkes-Barre Mountain Lions. That game is slated for a 12 PM tipoff.

North Carolina Central 107, University of Virginia – Lynchburg 54 

N.C. Central bounced back after dropping its season opener to come home and dominate the Dragons of the University of Virginia – Lynchburg in Durham, NC. The Eagles more than doubled the Dragons first half score leading by 40 points at the halftime break with the score sitting at 67-27. NCCU put up another 40 points in the second half while holding UVL to another 27 points as the Eagles claimed the 107 to 54 victory.  

A pair of Eagles led NCCU with 20+ points in Po’Boigh King (26) and Ja’Darius Harris (20). King shot 9-of-14 from the field while going 4-of-6 from behind the three-point arch. Harris was 8-of-11 from the field and 2-of-4 from three-point range. Perry Smith, Jr., and Fred Cleveland, Jr., also scored in double-digits. Smith Jr. tallied 12 points while Cleveland Jr. Added 11 of his own points. Timmy Adedire led the Eagles with 10 boards, seven on the defensive end.  

NCCU returns to the hardwood on Sunday, Nov. 12, when the team heads down to Georgia to play the Bulldogs from the University of Georgia. Tipoff in Athens, Ga., is set for 5 PM.

Norfolk State 90, Apprentice School 56 

The Spartans used a 20-point first half lead to aide in the 90-56 victory over the Builders from the Newport News Apprentice School. NSU came out of the gate scoring back-to-back three pointers from Betrand and Thomas, but the Apprentice School came back to even the score at 10 all just under the 14-minute mark of the first half. A 7-0 run ignited the Spartan offense who added 36 points to their total before the halftime buzzer rang while holding the Builders to only 16 more points. NSU again outscored the Apprentice School in the second half putting up 44 points and only allowing 30 points on defense.  

Three of Norfolk State’s five starters scored in double figures with Jaylani Darden leading the way with 12 points. Chris Fields, Jr., joined Darden with 12 points, while Jamarii Thomas and Allen Betrand each put up 11 points. Christian Ings added 10 points coming off the bench. Darden also led the Spartans in rebounds with seven.  

NSU is back in action again on Sunday evening when they host cross bay rival Hampton University in the annual Battle of the Bay. Tipoff time is set for 7 PM for one of the hottest tickets in the 757.

Georgia Tech 88, Howard 85 

The Bison held their own against the Yellow Jackets on Thursday evening leading Georgia Tech throughout a majority of the game. It was not until three minutes remained in the contest that Georgia Tech pulled ahead and held on just long enough to best Howard. Howard outscored Georgia Tech 47-41 in the first half of action, while the Yellow Jackets countered with a 47-38 run in the second to claim the victory.  

MEAC Preseason Player of the Year, Shy Odom led the Bison with 22 points shooting 9-of-17 from the field. He also collected seven rebounds, four assists, three blocks, and a steal. Teammates Joshua Strong and Bryce Harris joined Odom in double-digits putting up 18 and 17 points respectively. Isiah Warfield nearly cracked into double-figures putting nine points up on the board. Harris led all Bison with eight rebounds.  

Howard is back in action again on Sunday, Nov. 12, when they head to Harrisonburg, Va., to take on the Dukes of James Madison University. Tipoff is set for 4 PM.

Towson 70, Coppin State 49 

Towson bested Coppin State in Baltimore for the Eagles home opener 70-49. The Tigers took the lead early and never relinquished the advantage as the teams headed into the halftime break with the score sitting at 35-24. Coppin State added 25 points to its total in the second half but Towson matched their first half total with another 35 points to maintain the lead and pick up the win.  

Zahree Harrison and Justin Winston paced the Eagles with 12 points each. Harrison also led the team in rebounds with five and collected half of the team's six steals alongside Camaren Sparrow who had the other three steals. Sparrow also contributed eight points. 

The Eagles return to the court on Saturday, Nov. 11, when they travel to Emmitsburg, Md., to face the Mountaineers of Mount St. Mary’s. Tipoff is set at 4 PM.
