Howard 92, Hampton 80 

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The first half of the contest was close throughout with Howard holding on to a slim four-point lead, 40-36, at the half. In the battle of the HU universities, Howard pulled away in the second half putting up 52 additional points while holding Hampton to 44 points to claim the 92-80 victory.  

The Bison shot 56.3% from the field while going 50% from behind the three-point arch and an impressive 80.6% from the charity stripe. Howard held Hampton to a 50% shooting mark form the field, 32.1% from three-point range, and 71.4% from the free throw line.  

Howard was led by Bryce Harris and Marcus Dockery with 23 and 21 points respectively. Three other Bison also boast double-figure games in Shy Odom (12), Joshua Strong (12), and Dom Campbell (10).  

The Bison return to the court on Thursday, Nov. 9, when they travel to ATL for a matchup against Georgia Tech. Tipoff is set for 7:30 PM in Atlanta, Ga.

Norfolk State 102, Penn State Wilkes-Barre 55 

NORFOLK, Va. - A huge first half for the Spartans elevated Norfolk State over Penn State Wilkes-Barre 102-55. After sitting pretty even for the first three minutes, NSU took off on a 23-7 run going up 30-12 with ten minutes remaining in the opening half. At the intermission, Norfolk State held a 60-30 lead. From there the Green and Gold added 42 points in the second half while holding Wilkes-Barre to 25 en route to the 102-55 victory.  

The Spartans were led by Jamarii Thomas with 20 points in 20 minutes played. Kuluel Mading added 15 points while Allen Betrand put up 12. 

Norfolk State is back in action again at 7 PM on Thursday, Nov. 9, when they host the Builders from the Newport News Apprentice School at Echols Hall Arena.

Penn State 79, Delaware State 45 

In their 2023 debut the Hornets of Delaware State played a competitive game against the Nittany Lions form Penn State but the result did not fall in their favor dropping the contest 79-45. Penn State doubled Delaware State’s point total in the first half alone and almost repeated the same feat in the second half in the victory.  

DSU was led by Corey Perkins and Martaz Robinson with nine points each. Khyrie Staten added seven points to round out the top-three scorers for Delaware State. Alston Andrews nearly had a double-digit rebounding night with eight boards. 

The Hornets return to the hardwood on Friday evening when they travel to Austin, Texas, to face the Longhorns from the University of Texas. Tipoff time is slated for 8 PM ET / 7 PM CT.

Virginia Tech 100, Coppin State 55 

Coppin State fell 100-55 to the Hokies of Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va., to open the season. VT got out of the gates hot putting up 45 first half points while holding CSU to 19 points. The Eagles nearly doubled their first half points in the second half adding 36 points to their tally, but it was not enough to catch the Hokies in the end.  

Coppin State had three players in double-digit points in Preist Ryan (12), Justin Winston (12), and Toto Fagbenle (10). 

CSU returns to action on Thursday, Nov. 9, when they host Towson University in Baltimore with a tipoff time of 8 PM.

Temple 85, Maryland Eastern Shore 65 

The Hawks of Maryland Eastern Shore fared well against the Owls of Temple despite not collecting the desired result. UMES trailed by 12 points at halftime, 35-23, but closed that gap in the second as Temple only put up eight more points than Maryland Eastern Shore in the second half, 50-42.  

Chace Davis, Devon Ellis, and Damani Claxton all scored in double-figures, while Troy Hupstead collected 10 rebounds.  

Maryland Eastern shore hits the hardwood again on Saturday, Nov. 11, when they host Cairn University in Princess Anne, Md. Tipoff is set for 3 PM for UMES’s homecoming weekend.

No. 1 Kansas 99, N.C. Central 56 

The Eagles of N.C. Central appeared on the largest stage last night playing in front of 16,300 fans at the Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence, Kansas. Taking on the No. 1 ranked Jayhawks of Kansas University, N.C. Central fell 99-56. KU opened the game with a very strong first half tallying 59 points while holding NCCU to 18. The second half was much more even with the second half score sitting at 40-38 KU leading.  

Similar to the other games on the night, three Eagles scored in double-digits; Ja’Darius Harris (12), Josh Smith (11), and Po’Boigh King (10).  

NCCU get back on the court Thursday evening when they host the UNiversity of Virginia – Lynchburg in Durham, N.C. at 7 PM.

No. 12 Arizona 122, Morgan State 59 

TUCSON, Az. - In the latest game of opening day, the Bear took on No. 12 Arizona in Tucson, Az, and took a battering from the Wildcats. Morgan State went toe-to-toe with Arizona for the opening four minutes of action as the score sat at 13-10 in Arizona’s favor. A 15-2 run gave the Wildcats enough separation that they continued to build on and never looked back in the 122-59 beating of the Bears.  

MSU was led by Christian Oliver (12), Myles Thompson (11), and Wynston Tabbs (10), who all put up double-digits in the game.  

The Bears return to the hardwood on Thursday, Nov. 9 for a 6 p.m. tipoff versus Cheney University of Pennsylvania at Hill Field House.
