Temple 109, Delaware State 43

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The City of Brotherly Love was not so loving on Monday night as the Hornets of Delaware State suffered a beating against the Owls of Temple University. Temple opened up a large lead in the first quarter holding Delaware State to just six points while scoring 30 of their own in the first ten minutes of action. The lead continued to grow as the Owls went ahead 52-23 at the half as DSU nearly tripled their points scored in the second quarter from the first. The Hornets added 20 more points in the second half of action but the could not catch the Owls who added 57 additional points in the second half to win 109-43. 

DSU was led by Kiarra Mcelrath with 16 points while Deyonce Thompson added 12 of her own. Delaware State returns to action on Friday, Nov. 10 when they host Drexel University in Dover, Del. Tipoff time is set for 5:30 PM.

George Washington 64, Howard 58 
WASHINGTON, D.C. -
Howard women’s basketball was edged by six points by the Colonials of George Washington in the 2023-24 season opener. GWU took an early lead in the first quarter that they were able to hold on to throughout the remainder of the game.  

Howard was led by Tyana Walker with 16 points afer gooing 6-16 from the field including two from beyond the arch. Vanessa Blake and Kaniyah Harris both recorded double-doubles with 16 points and 11 rebounds and 10 points, 10 rebounds respectively. 

Howard women’s basketball is back on the court on Thursday at 7 PM against Mount St. Mary's.

Norfolk State 66, William & Mary 64 

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The Spartans narrowly edged out the Tribe of William & Mary in their season opener on the road in Williamsburg, Va. W&M opened the game with a strong first quarter taking a 15-7 lead. Norfolk State climbed back into the game at the halfway point trailing by just five points, 31-26. William & Mary outscored Norfolk State in the fourth quarter, but Norfolk State’s lead was just enough to hold off the Tribe.  

Junior forward Kierra Wheeler led the Spartans with 17 points, going 7-of-13 in the paint with seven rebounds. Niya Fields added 13 points while first year Da’Brya Clark added 11.  

NSU is back on the court on Wednesday when they travel to Philadelphia, Pa., or a midweek game at Drexel.

Morgan State 59, Washington Adventist 57 

BALTIMORE, Md. - The Bears of Morgan State squeaked by the Shock of Washington Adventist in a very close season opener in Baltimore, Md. WAU led MSU through the opening two quarters going into the halftime break ahead 29 to 20. The Bears closed the gap to six points at the end of the third quarter and in the fourth Morgan State rallied to outscore Washington Adventist 17-9 to win the game 59-47.  

Kaia Ponder led the Bears with a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Joelle Johnson and Gabrielle Johnson collected 11 and 10 kills respectively.  

Morgan State returns to the court on Sunday, Nov. 12, against Sacred Heart at 2 PM.

La Salle 73, Coppin State 68 

BALTIMORE, Md. - The Eagles opened the 2023-24 season off with a loss to La Salle 73-68 in Baltimore, Md. The Explorers opened the game with a slim lead in the first quarter 14-10, and were holding on to a 32-30 lead at the halftime break. Coppin State came out in the third quarter to take the lead after putting up 19 points to head into the fourth quarter with the score sitting at 49-46. A strong 27-point push from La Salle in the fourth boosted the Explorers ahead of the Eagles (19-points) to win the game 73-68. 

Two Lady Eagles boasted 20-point performances in the season opener in Angel Jones (22) and Laila Lawrence (20). Lawrence put up a double-double by adding 10 rebounds to her stat line. Pre-season first-team All-MEAC honoree, Mossi Staples, added 10 points for the Eagles.  

Coppin State returns to the court on Thursday, Nov. 9, when they host the Fighting Camels of Campbell University at 5 PM.

Georgetown 61, Maryland Eastern Shore 50 

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Hoyas of Georgetown University defeated the Hawks of Maryland Eastern Shore in the 2023-24 season opener. GU opened the first quarter with a 21-16 run and led 33-29 heading into the halftime break. The Hoyas put some distance between themselves and the Hawks in the third quarter after going on a 16-9 run that put the score at 49-38. Both teams scored 12 points apiece in the fourth quarter but the Hoya lead was just enough to keep them in front o of the Hawks for the win.  

Zamara Haynes and Mya Thomas led UMES with 18 and 15 points respectively. Maryland Eastern Shore is back in action on Wednesday, Nov. 8, when they travel to Charlottesville, Va., to face off against the University of Virginia. Tipoff is set for 6 PM.
