MEAC Announces Weekly Women’s Basketball Honors, presented by Coca-Cola

NORFOLK, Va., Nov. 29, 2023 – Coppin State junior forward Laila Lawrence was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Week, presented by Coca-Cola. North Carolina Central’s junior forward Morgan Callahan earned Defensive Player of the Week honors, while Howard’s freshman guard Tyana Walker was named Rookie of the Week, respectively.   

Lawrence (Jr., F, Lewisville, Texas) led the Eagles with her fourth double-double of the season in a 61-56 victory over Pittsburgh. She posted 16 points and 12 rebounds in CSU’s first win over a power five program. Lawrence averaged 14.5 points in two games shooting 50 percent from the field (11-of-22) and 60 percent from the free-throw line (6-of-10). She totaled 18 rebounds (9.0 avg) with four blocks, two assists, and two steals. She added a team-high 13 points against George Mason.

Callahan (Jr., F, Beach Park, Ill.) averaged 15.5 points, 7.0 rebounds, 3.0 steals, and 1.0 assists as the Eagles went 1-1 on the week. She posted a 15-point, 9-rebound performance in a win over Western Carolina. Against Duke, Callahan contributed 16 points, five rebounds, and four steals. She shot 43.8 percent from the field and 37.5 percent from the charity stripe.  

Walker (Fr., G, Leawood, Kan.) led the Bison offense with 18 points, while tallying four rebounds and three steals in the 53-50 loss to Manhattan. The redshirt freshman shot 40 percent from the floor while improving to an average of 12.9 ppg and 3.7 rpg. 

Other Top Performers 

Da'naijah Williams (Norfolk State) averaged 10.0 points and 6.5 rebounds in a pair of road games for the Spartans at the Miami Thanksgiving Tournament. She recorded nine points with seven rebounds against East Tennessee State and added 11 points and six rebounds in the 58-51 win over Colgate.
