BALTIMORE – Coppin State volleyball head coach
Tim Walsh picked up his 100
th win with the program as the Eagles swept Le Moyne, 3-0 (25-14, 25-14, 25-20) on Tuesday night at PEC Arena. With the victory, Coppin improved to 21-3 on the season and won its 11
th non-conference match to extend a program record.
The winningest coach in program history and a two-time MEAC Coach of the Year, Walsh is now 100-95 (.513) in his seven seasons at Coppin. Over the last six seasons, Walsh and the Eagles have gone an impressive 96-69 (.582) overall and 54-19 (.740) in the MEAC.
While playing all 14 healthy player, Coppin got a team-high six kills from
TaKenya Stafford, followed by
Paola Caten,
Geraldyn Palacios and
Laila Ibrahim with five.
Hope Casel and
Kaliko Schilling added three apiece along with two by
Divine Muo and one each by setters
Andrea Serrano and
Andrea Tsvetanova.
Tsvetanova tallied 14 assists, five aces and six digs in just two sets while Serrano was credited with seven assists and a team-high eight digs.
In the back row, Stafford also had six digs, followed by Caten with five, Schilling with four and both
Coco Figueroa and
Ashley Roman with three. Muo also dug a pair of Le Moyne attacks as Coppin outhit Le Moyne, .238 to .000.
Genesis Hernandez contributed with an ace while
Ayanna Pharoah picked up a dig and an assist as well.
At the block, Palacios led all players with four, followed by Casel and
Cameron Lucas with three and three players with two.
Set 1
- After a match-opening kill by Le Moyne, Coppin scored nine-straight as Stafford recorded three kills while Tsvetanova aced the Dolphins three times before the guests got back on the board.
- The Eagles answered with a 6-1 spurt to continue pulling away as Coppin forced Le Moyne into a -.038 hitting percentage.
Set 2
- Coppin was just as dominant in the second set, hitting .458 while the Dolphins once again had more errors than kills.
- The Eagles pulled away midway through the set with a 5-1 run which featured another ace by Tsvetanova along with a kill and a block from Stafford.
- CSU also closed the set on a 5-1 run as Casel started it with a kill and a block, along with kills from Schilling, Ibrahim and Caten. Palacios also recorded an ace during the stretch.
Set 3
- Coppin played the entire roster in the third set and the freshman-laden lineup rallied from behind to finish the sweep.
- Trailing, 13-11, Schilling answered with a kill before Palacios aced the Dolphins on back-to-back points.
- Le Moyne retook the lead before a 4-0 CSU run, featuring a pair of points from Caten and an ace by Figueroa, gave the Eagles a 21-17 lead.
- The Eagles never looked back before winning the match on a Le Moyne service error.
Up Next: Coppin will look to clinch its third MEAC regular season title in the last four seasons when it hosts Norfolk State on Friday, November 3 before visiting Howard on Sunday, November 5. The Eagles will close the regular season with back-to-back matches against Morgan State on November 8 and 10, with the finale at PEC Arena.
