Maryland Eastern Shore fought back on Friday night to win in five sets over North Carolina Central.

With the victory, UMES matches its win total from last season while improving to 9-8 overall and 2-3 in the MEAC. NCCU, which played in their ninth five-set match of the year, fell to 2-12 overall and 1-4 in the conference.

In a first set which included 13 ties and six lead changes, UMES clung to a 20-19 lead before surrendering five straight points to NCCU and eventually falling by a score of 25-21. The Hawks bounced back midway through the second set by scoring eight straight points to balloon their lead to 22-14 and finishing the set with a 25-15 win.

In a battle for first place, TaKenya Stafford posted a match-high 14 kills to lead the Coppin State volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-19, 25-15, 25-22) victory at Norfolk State on Friday night at Gill Gymnasium. The Eagles improve to 15-3 on the year and 5-0 in league play while the Spartans fall to 5-7 overall and 4-1 in the conference.
 
Stafford swung .220 with just five errors on 41 swings while adding seven digs and three blocks. Geraldyn Palacios added eight kills, followed by Paola Caten with seven kills while not recording an error to hit .538. Hope Casel and Laila Ibrahim chipped in with six and five kills, respectively, with Ibrahim leading the way with four blocks.

Delaware State 3, South Carolina State 0

The Delaware State volleyball team got the job done in three sets (25-13, 25-20, 25-8) to take down the South Carolina State Bulldogs Friday at home at Memorial Hall.

The conference victory improved Delaware State's record to 10-9 overall and 3-2 in MEAC play.

Ella Sanders finished with 11 kills on the day to lead the Hornets offense while finishing with a hitting percentage of .556. Gerren Tomlin to lead them defensively with 8 digs. Daisey Ramos had a match-high three aces in the win. Delaware State attackers were helped by a match-high 19 assists from Kaulana Kalulu-Sugai.
