MEAC Announces Weekly Football Honors, presented by Coca-Cola

NORFOLK, Va., October 23, 2023 – Howard quarterback Quinton Williams was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Offensive Player of the Week, presented by Coca-Cola. Howard defensive back Kenny Gallop, Jr. earned Defensive Player of the Week honors, while South Carolina State’s Jawarn Howell was named Rookie of the Week. SCSU’s Erick Brown, Jr., and NSU’s Grandin Willcox received Offensive Lineman of the Week and Specialist of the Week accolades, respectively.  

Williams (QB, 6-5, 205, Gr., Upper Marlboro, Md.) tallied three touchdowns and orchestrated the game-winning drive in a comeback victory over Norfolk State. He completed 14-of-24 passes for 240 yards with two touchdowns. He also amassed 42 yards on the ground on five carries with one touchdown. 

Gallop, Jr. (DB, 6-0, 214, Sr., Portsmouth, Va.) produced a season high 11 total tackles, six solo, with one for a loss of 10 yards, including 0.5 sacks for a four-yard loss. He also delivered the game-clinching interception to secure Howard’s victory over Norfolk State.  

Howell (RB, 6-1, 215, Fr., Mooresville, N.C.) recorded 119 yards on 13 carries with three touchdowns in the Bulldog’s win over Delaware State.   

Brown (OL, 6-4, 300, r-Jr., Irmo, S.C.) graded out at 95-percent of all blocking assignments as he aided the Bulldog’s to 522 yards of total offense and 360 yards rushing. He also recorded five pancake blocks in the team’s win.  

Wilcox (P, 5-11, 220, So., Ocala, Fla.) made all three of his field goal attempts, including a career-best 50-yard field goal, one yard shy of the school’s record. He also nailed a 36-yarder and recorded two point after attempts against Howard.  

Other Top Performers 

Aaron Bickerton (Howard) performed double-duty in the kicking game, going a perfect 2-for-2 (30, 31) in field goals with while downing two punts.  

Jason Chambers (North Carolina Central) intercepted a 44-yard return, recovered a fumble, and registered one tackle against Morgan State.  

Baron Franks (Norfolk State) led the offensive line that powered NSU to 358 total yards, including 140 yards on the ground.  

Patrick Godbolt (South Carolina State) recorded four solo tackles, with 3.0 for a loss of seven yards and one pass breakup in a win over Delaware State.  

Erick Hunter (Morgan State) collected 11 tackles, seven solo, with 0.5 tackles for a loss of two yards and one pass breakup.   

Otto Kuhns (Norfolk State) completed 16-of-26 passes for 218 yards with one touchdown and rushed nine times for 26 yards against Howard.  

Shane Messenger (Morgan State) averaged 38.8 yards on five punts, including three downed inside the 20-yard line and a 46-yard long.   

Adrian Olivo (North Carolina Central) accounted for nine points, including 3-for-3 on field goals with a long of 41-yards.  

A.J. Richardson (Norfolk State) notched six tackles, five solo, with 2.5 for a loss of six yards against Howard.  

Tyler Smith (South Carolina State) rushed for 122 yards on 12 carries with one touchdown in the Bulldog’s win over Delaware State.
