Norfolk State picked up their second consecutive MEAC win after defeating N.C. Central in four sets in Durham, N.C. Freshman Gabrielle Gilbert tied her career-high 22 kills in the match while sophomore setter Sydney McCree put up 41 assists playing in front of her hometown crowd. Emmie Modlin led the Eagles with eight kills while Bella Dearinger put up 25 assists. 

After Norfolk State opened the match with a pretty convincing first set victory, 25-14, N.C. Central answered by evening the match score at one set each as the Eagles won set two 25-22. The Spartans settled down and got back in the groove as they held the Eagles to a combined 24 points over the next two sets winning set three 25-15 and set four 25-9.  

NSU improves to 7-8 overall and 6-2 in MEAC play to maintain its hold on second in the standings, while NCCU falls to 2-6 in the MEAC and 3-14 overall. Both teams return to the court on Sunday as the Spartans travel to face the SCSU Bulldogs, while the Eagles will host the Bison of Howard.

Coppin State 3, Delaware State 2 

The Hornets and Eagles battled it out on the court all night in Baltimore, Md. Delaware State seemed to have the match in hand after winning the first two sets, 32-30 and 25-21. Coppin State battled back to win sets three (25-19) and four (25-16) forcing a fifth set as the Eagles looked to remain undefeated in conference play. A tight fifth set ensued between the two squads with the Coppin State edging past the Delaware State to claim the set 15-9 and the reserve match victory in five sets. 

Hope Casel led the Eagle attack with a career-high 18 kills to hit .300 on the night while also adding in two blocks and three digs. Andrea Tsvetanova put up 48 assists for Coppin State as well as 17 digs for a double-double. She added an impressive six service aces to lead all players in the game. 

Coppin State remains undefeated in MEAC action improving to 7-0 and 17-3 overall. Delaware State falls to 11-11 overall and 4-4 in league play. Both teams return to action on Sunday with the Hornets going across town to play the Bears of Morgan State, while the Eagles host the Hawks of Maryland Eastern Shore who are on a three-game winning streak.

Maryland Eastern Shore 3, Morgan State 2 

Maryland Eastern Shore picked up a thrilling five-set victory over Morgan State in Baltimore, Md. UMES was led by Nkemjika Ikemefuna with 17 kills while Derionah Abner and Ranyla Griggs added 12 kills each in the reverse comeback for the Hawks.

Morgan State opened the match claiming the first two sets 28-26 and 25-20, looking like they would pick up their second conference win of the season. The visiting Hawks had other things in mind as the team completed the second reverse sweep of the evening winning the match in five sets. Maryland Eastern Shore won the remaining three sets 26-24, 25-19, and 15-5.

Morgan State will play again on Sunday when they travel to Dover, Del., to face the reigning MEAC Champions in the Hornets of Delaware State. Maryland Eastern Shore is back on the court on Sunday, Oct. 22, when they host the Eagles of Coppin State.
