MEAC Announces Weekly Women’s Basketball Honors, presented by Coca-Cola

NORFOLK, Va., Jan. 31, 2023Howard University junior guard Destiny Howell was selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, presented by Coca-Cola, the conference office announced today. Maryland Eastern Shore’s Jála Bannerman was named Rookie of the Week, while Morgan State graduate forward Charlene Shepherd earned Defensive Player of the Week honors.
 
Howell (6-0, Jr., G, Queens, N.Y.) averaged 22.0 points in a pair of conference wins for the Bison, shooting a combined 49% (17-for-35) from the floor and hitting eight of her 17 3-point tries (47%) for the week. Against North Carolina Central, Howell dropped 24 points to go along with four rebounds and two assists, hitting nine field goals and four threes. Against South Carolina State, she had four more 3-pointers in a 20-point effort.
 
Bannerman (5-6, Fr., G, Baltimore, Md.) had 18 points against Morgan State, to go along with four steals and three assists, going 5-for-9 from the floor (56%), 2-for-6 from 3-point range (33%) and 6-for-8 (75%) from the free throw line.
 
Shepherd (6-2, Gr., F, Killeen, Texas) totaled 13 rebounds in two wins for the Bears, 11 of which came on the defensive end, including 10 on Saturday against Delaware State. She also notched four steals and two blocked shots in that contest, and against Maryland Eastern Shore, she added two steals and a block.
 
Other Top Performers
Brooklyn Fort-Davis (Howard) grabbed eight rebounds against North Carolina Central and seven against South Carolina State.
 
Ariana Seawell (Maryland Eastern Shore) had 20 points and seven rebounds against Morgan State.
 
Taylor Addison (Morgan State) recorded a double-double against Maryland Eastern Shore, with 21 points (on five 3-pointers) and 11 rebounds.
 
Deja Francis (Norfolk State) had 12 points, five rebounds, four steals and three assists against South Carolina State.
 
Kierra Wheeler (Norfolk State) grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked three shots against South Carolina State.
 
Jerni Kiaku (North Carolina Central) had a team-high 17 points against Howard.
 
Sonnier Lovely (South Carolina State) had 14 points and 12 rebounds against Howard.
