DOVER, Del. --- Martaz Robinson hit the winning basket on a leaning 12-foot jumper with 2.4 seconds left to give Delaware State a 64-62 victory over Morgan State in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) thriller in Memorial Hall today. The Hornets have now won two games in a row to improve to 3-16 overall and 2-4 in the MEAC.
The Bears (11-10; 4-2) had won seven of their previous eight games and were tied for first place in the MEAC entering the contest.
Delaware State trailed 30-29 at the break, but took control of the game in the second half, leading as many as 11 points. Morgan State clawed back, and tied the game at 62-62 on a three-point basket by Isaiah Burke with 21 seconds left to play. After a Delaware State time out, the Hornets worked the clock to set up Robinson for the game-winner from the left side of the hoop.
Delaware State will go for its third win in a row on Monday at Coppin State in Baltimore.
Howard 71, North Carolina Central 67
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Elijah Hawkins led three Howard men’s basketball players in double-figure scoring as he poured in 17 points to help the Bison to a 71 to 67 win over North Carolina Central on Saturday evening.
Marcus Dockery and Shy Odom finished with 16 and 15 points, respectively for Howard (13-10; 5-1 MEAC). Brendan Medley-Bacon led NCCU (10-10; 3-3 MEAC) with 15 points.
The Bison host South Carolina State on Monday in a 7:30 p.m. matchup.
Norfolk State 82, South Carolina State 68
NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State men's basketball team bounced back from Monday's road loss with a comfortable home win over South Carolina State on Saturday. After a neck-and-neck first half, the Spartans pulled away for an 82-68 victory. The Spartans improved to 14-7 on the season and 4-2 in the MEAC with the win.
Joe Bryant, Jr. led the way for the home squad, nearly earning the third double-double of his career with a 23-point, nine-rebound performance. Dana Tate, Jr. followed closely behind, scoring 21 points while shooting 8-of-14 from the floor and 3-of-6 from deep.
Norfolk State hosts North Carolina Central in a nationally televised game that will air on ESPNU at 7 p.m. on Monday.
Maryland Eastern Shore 94, Coppin State 75
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's basketball team made history on Saturday evening at the Hytche, winning its fifth consecutive contest over Coppin State by a 94-75 final.
The win moved the Hawks to 5-1 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play, the best start to league action since the program returned to the MEAC in the 1981-82 season. It also moved UMES to 8-0 at home, the best home start since returning to the conference, and a five-game winning streak, the best run since the 1997-98 season.
Several Hawks posted career-highs in the win. Nathaniel Pollard, Jr. logged his fourth double-double of the campaign and the fifth of his career, comprised of career-highs in points (23) and assists (6) with 12 boards.
Zion Styles nearly reached his career scoring mark, pouring in 20 points with five rebounds while doubling his previous career-high in assists with eight.
The Hawks take on Morgan State at 7:30 p.m. on Monday.
