WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Howard University men's basketball team extended its win streak to four as they defeated Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) opponent Coppin State University (CSU), 90-76, at The Burr.
With the win, the Bison moved to 4-1 in league play. In the win streak, Howard has scored 80 or more points in all four games and five of the last six games.
Four different Bison finished with double digits: Steve Settle, III and Marcus Dockery both with 14 points; Elijah Hawkins with 13 points and Bryce Harris with 11 points off the bench.
The Bison will take on North Carolina Central Saturday (Jan. 28) at Burr Gymnasium. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m., live on ESPNU.
Morgan State 77, Norfolk State 71
BALTIMORE, Md. – Redshirt sophomore forward Will Thomas poured in a game and career-high 27 points and senior guard Isaiah Burke added 21 points to help lead Morgan State to a 77-71 conference win against Norfolk State on ESPNU in front of an energized crowd at Hill Field House.
Thomas, who entered the game averaging 7.4 points and 3.1 rebounds, was inserted to the starting lineup in place of Malik Miller who was out due to injury. The Baltimore product scored 15 of his career-high 27 points in the second half and finished the night with a double-double performance. He shot 11-for-22 from the floor, was 3-of-6 from downtown and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.
Morgan will travel to Dover, Del., to take on the Delaware State Hornets (2-16, 1-4) on Saturday at Memorial Hall. Tip-off is slated for 4 p.m.
Delaware State 88, South Carolina State 85
ORANGEBURG, S.C. – Visiting Delaware State used strong second half and overtime play to notch its first MEAC win since the 2020-21 season, defeating South Carolina State 88-85 at the Smith-Hammond-Middleton Center this evening. The Hornets also snapped a 15-game skid to improve to 2-16 overall and 1-4 in the MEAC.
Delaware State trailed by 13 points at the break but outscored the Bulldogs 45-32 in the second half to force the extra period. The Hornets won the overtime 17-14. Khyrie Staten sealed the win by hitting two free throws with two seconds left in the extra session. South Carolina State missed a desperation three-point attempt at the final buzzer. Staten came off the bench to lead four double-figure scorers for the Hornets with 19 points, highlighted by 8-for-9 shooting at the free-throw line.
The Hornets return to action on Saturday at home against Morgan State. Game time is set for 4 p.m. in Memorial Hall (Bayhealth Court).
Maryland Eastern Shore 59, North Carolina Central 58
DURHAM, N.C. — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's basketball team used three steals to fuel an 8-0 run in the final 90 seconds to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat, shocking North Carolina Central in a 59-58 final at McDougald-McLendon Arena on Monday night.
The Hawks have now won four straight in league play, moving to 11-8 overall and 4-1 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference action. The loss drops the Eagles to 10-9 on the year and 3-2 in conference play.
The Hawks will return to the nest and prepare for a home duel with Coppin State on Saturday, January 28 at 4 p.m. The game will follow the 2 p.m. contest between the women's squads.
