WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Howard University men's basketball team used its depth, balanced scoring and one of its best defensive efforts of the season into a convincing 88-56 win over Morgan State in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) showdown before a packed house at Burr Gymnasium.
With the win, the Bison (11-10, 3-1 MEAC) now have a share of first place in the MEAC standings, along with Norfolk State, Morgan State, North Carolina Central and Maryland Eastern Shore.
Howard will be seeking its fourth straight when it hosts Coppin State Monday (Jan. 23) at 7:30 p.m. in The Burr.
North Carolina Central 74, Delaware State 55
DURHAM, N.C. – Four double-figure scorers lift the North Carolina Central University men's basketball team over Delaware State University 74-55 to earn its third-straight MEAC win. The victory extends the Eagles' home game winning streak to 10, dating back to the end of last season (3/3/22).
In the first half, the maroon and gray jumped out to a 10-3 lead before the first media time-out. The Hornets responded and took a 16-15 lead at the 10:51 mark. The Eagles led the rest of the half and closed out the stanza with a 13-4 scoring run to give them a 34-24 advantage at the break.
Up next, NCCU (10-8, 3-1 MEAC) will host Maryland Eastern Shore inside McDougald-McLendon Arena on Monday, Jan. 23 at 7:30 p.m.
Norfolk State 96, Coppin State 65
BALTIMORE, Md. – Norfolk State put its offensive talent on display on Saturday evening at the Physical Education Complex, taking down Coppin State 96-65 in a dominant bounce-back performance.
Cahiem Brown led the Spartans with 21 points on an efficient shooting day (7-of-11 from the field and 7-of-9 from the free throw line), his third time this year breaching the 20-point barrier. Kris Bankston (19), Joe Bryant Jr. (17) and George Beale Jr. (17) also scored in double figures, with Bankston adding 13 rebounds for a commanding double-double.
Norfolk State remains in Baltimore for a Monday night matchup at Morgan State scheduled for 7:30 p.m. The game will be televised in front of a national audience on ESPNU.
Maryland Eastern Shore 76, South Carolina State 70
ORANGEBURG, S.C. — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's basketball team secured its tenth victory of the season on Saturday evening, knocking off South Carolina State 76-70 at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.
The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference foes traded buckets out of the gate, finding themselves in a 9-9 tie just over three minutes in. The Hawks used consecutive baskets to spread the gap to four, but the Bulldogs responded with six straight to lead 15-13.
The Hawks have a quick turnaround as they prepare for the second half of the road trip, battling North Carolina Central on Monday, January 23 in Durham. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. from McDougald-McLendon Arena.
