Battle of the Bay Highlights Week 3 of MEAC Football

NORFOLK, Va., Sept. 14, 2022 – Former conference foes will square off at Dick Price Stadium this Saturday to highlight a five-game slate of Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) football action.
 
Off its 33-9 win over Bethune-Cookman this past Saturday, South Carolina State (1-1) is idle this week.
 
Here is a look at each game in Week 3.
 
Sacred Heart Pioneers (1-1, 0-0 NEC) vs. Morgan State Bears (0-2, 0-0 MEAC)

Morgan State will have its home opener this weekend, storming Hughes Stadium after narrowly falling 29-21 to crosstown rival Towson this past Saturday. The Bears are looking for their first win of the Damon Wilson era, and they’ll be facing Sacred Heart for the second straight season and third time overall; the two squads met in 2021 in Fairfield, Conn., with the Pioneers coming away with the 21-7 win. Morgan State posted a 30-27 win in the initial meeting between the teams on Sept. 1, 2012. Sacred Heart is coming off a 14-10 win over Central Connecticut State this past weekend, and the Pioneers are in their eighth season under head coach Mark Nofri.
 
Virginia University of Lynchburg Dragons (0-2) vs. Delaware State Hornets (1-1, 0-0 MEAC)

Saturday’s contest, the second home game of the season for the Hornets, will mark the third-ever meeting between Delaware State and Virginia University of Lynchburg; the first meeting came in 2018, when Delaware State won 41-7. The Hornets also won last season 56-6, and they will be looking to bounce back from last week’s 35-9 loss to in-state rival Delaware. Lynchburg, meanwhile, is 0-2 on the young season following a 21-13 loss this past week to Presbyterian. This game will mark the first of four for the Dragons against MEAC foes this season – they will also face North Carolina Central, Morgan State and South Carolina State in 2022.
 
Hampton Pirates (2-0, 0-0 CAA) vs. Norfolk State Spartans (0-2, 0-0 MEAC)

While the Spartans and Pirates are no longer conference foes, the Battle of the Bay is still very much a thing, and this year, Norfolk State will welcome Hampton to Dick Price Stadium in search of its first win of 2022. Norfolk State’s home opener will mark the 57th all-time meeting between the two teams, with the Spartans holding a 27-26-1 edge in the series. Hampton is 2-0 in its fourth season under head coach Robert Prunty, and its first as a member of the CAA, after a 42-10 win over Tuskegee this past weekend, while the Spartans are coming off a 63-7 loss to James Madison, one of the newest members of the Sun Belt.
 
Howard Bison (0-3, 0-0 MEAC) vs. Morehouse Maroon Tigers (0-2, 0-0 SIAC)
HBCU NYC Football Classic

The Bison’s season-opening road tour continues this weekend, as Howard heads to MetLife Stadium for the HBCU NYC Football Classic against Morehouse College out of the SIAC. Howard is still in search of its first win of the season following this past Saturday’s 42-20 loss to South Florida, while Morehouse is coming off a 42-0 loss this past weekend to West Georgia. These two teams last met in 2014, when Howard won 35-17 at RFK Stadium. Howard and Morehouse squared off for four straight years from 2011-14, all in the nation’s capital, with the Bison coming away victorious all four times.
 
North Carolina Central Eagles (2-0, 0-0 MEAC) vs. No. 25 New Hampshire Wildcats (2-0, 2-0 CAA)

North Carolina Central is 2-0 to open the season for the first time since 2006 after this past weekend’s 41-0 win over Winston-Salem State. It was the Eagles’ first shutout win since 2017, and they will head north for their first true road game this weekend against New Hampshire, ranked No. 25 in the nation in the STATS Perform FCS Top 25 poll. The Wildcats, out of the CAA and in their first season under head coach Rick Santos, have opened the 2022 campaign with back-to-back conference wins, including a 28-23 victory over Albany this past weekend. Saturday’s game will be the first-ever meeting between the two teams.
