MEAC Announces Weekly Volleyball Honors, presented by Coca-Cola

NORFOLK, Va., Sept. 12, 2022Delaware State senior outside hitter Karen Cordero and Coppin State graduate middle blocker/outside hitter Ammaarah Williams were selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Volleyball Co-Players of the Week, presented by Coca-Cola, the conference office announced today. Norfolk State’s Sydney McCree was named Rookie of the Week and Howard senior Kayla Diaz was named Setter of the Week, while Coppin State senior Ashley Roman earned Defensive Player of the Week honors.
 
Cordero (5-9, Sr., OH, Chula Vista, Calif.) hit .453 over four matches, all Delaware State wins, this past week, averaging nearly three kills per set. She went error-free twice, including Saturday’s 11-kill performance against Alabama State, and she had 11 digs against Alabama A&M. She also had eight kills and three aces against Alcorn State.
 
Williams (6-0, Gr., MB/OH, Cleveland, Ohio) racked up three double-doubles in four matches this past week, including averages of 3.3 kills and 3.4 digs per set. She opened with 13 kills and a career-high 22 digs against American, before going for 10 kills and 11 digs against Alabama A&M. On Saturday, Williams had 13 kills and 10 digs against Alcorn State. She was also a force at the net, recording at least one block in each match – including three against Alabama State.
 
McCree (5-10, Fr., S, Durham, N.C.) recorded double-doubles in three of her four matches this past week, averaging 6.6 assists and 2.6 digs per set. She opened with 39 assists and 10 digs against Hampton, before going for 28 assists and a career-high 15 digs against The Citadel. Against New Hampshire, McCree had 20 assists and 11 digs.
 
Diaz (5-7, Sr., S, Nanuet, N.Y.) was named All-Tournament at the Fairfield Invitational after averaging 9.6 assists per set and recording a double-double against Fairfield (47 assists, 11 digs). She also had 33 assists against High Point and 30 against Fairleigh Dickinson. The Fairfield match also saw Diaz record three kills on five attempts, and she also had two blocks against High Point. Diaz had at least one kill and one block in each match.
 
Roman (5-5, Sr., L, Isabela, Puerto Rico) averaged 7.6 digs per set for the Eagles in four matches, and her 36 digs against American were a new program record. She also had 29 digs against Alabama State and 26 against Alabama A&M, and Roman is now 113 digs shy of the program career record.
 
Other Top Performers
Andrea Tsvetanova (Coppin State) had double-doubles against American (40 assists, 16 digs) and Alabama State (32 assists, 10 digs).
 
Malgorzata Andersohn (Delaware State) averaged 6.7 assists per set in four matches this past week.
 
Jasmal Cruz (Delaware State) averaged 3.75 digs per set in four matches, including 13 against Bowie State and 12 against Alcorn State.
 
Maya Gerlach (Howard) had 10 kills and six blocks, hitting .471 in a win over Fairfield.
 
Sophia Chacon (Maryland Eastern Shore) had 26 assists against Radford.
 
Nkemjika Ikemefuna (Maryland Eastern Shore) had 12 kills on .526 hitting against William & Mary.
 
Mackenzie Jefferson (Morgan State) recorded 21 assists against Cleveland State and added 18 against Akron.
 
Jourdan Page (Morgan State) recorded nine kills against Akron and had eight kills and 11 digs against Cleveland State.
 
Alyssa Sampson (Morgan State) had 14 digs against Cleveland State and 11 against Akron.
 
Kamren Harper (North Carolina Central) recorded eight kills against North Carolina A&T State and seven against UNC Greensboro.
