NORFOLK, Va., Aug. 22, 2022
—The 2022 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) volleyball season begins this weekend, with all eight of the league’s member institutions scheduled to compete in 24 non-conference matches.

Howard will be the lone MEAC program to play at home this weekend, with two of its three matches in Burr Gymnasium. The Bison will play host to George Washington and George Mason on Friday before making the short trip across the nation’s capital to face Georgetown on Saturday.

Coppin State will be in Greensboro, N.C., for a weekend tournament that will include match-ups against former MEAC schools North Carolina A&T State and Bethune-Cookman, while Delaware State will compete in a tournament hosted by Youngstown State.

Maryland Eastern Shore will be in Vestal, N.Y. for a trio of matches, and Morgan State will welcome new head coach Xiomara Ortiz in Charlotte, N.C., taking on Charlotte, Campbell and Wofford. Norfolk State will make the short trip to Greenville, N.C., to compete in a tournament hosted by East Carolina.

North Carolina Central will open the season against Wake Forest, Kennesaw State and Western Carolina in Winston-Salem, N.C., while South Carolina State will head to Huntington, W.Va., for matches against Wright State, tournament host Marshall and Evansville.

Howard, which won MEAC championships from 2015-19 and in 2021, is the preseason favorite to win the 2022 MEAC title, with Delaware State – which shared the 2021 regular-season title with Howard – picked to finish second. Coppin State was picked to finish third.

Coppin State’s Miajavon Coleman, the 2021 MEAC Player of the Year, was voted as the Preseason Player of the Year by the league’s head coaches and sports information directors, and she headlines a Preseason All-MEAC Team that also features fellow Eagles Paola Caten, Ashley Roman and Ammaarah Williams, Delaware State’s Alondra Maldonado and Howard’s Bria Woodard and Cimone Woodard.

Conference play is set to begin on Friday, Sept. 23.

All eight programs will compete in the 2022 MEAC Volleyball Championship, which will be held Nov. 18-20 on the campus of Delaware State University in Dover, Del.
