NORFOLK, Va., Aug. 17, 2022 – Coppin State graduate outside hitter Miajavon Coleman was selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Volleyball Preseason Player of the Year, presented by TowneBank, the conference announced. Defending champion Howard was selected as the preseason favorite to win the conference.
All awards were voted on by the conference’s head coaches and sports information directors.
Coleman, the 2021 MEAC Player of the Year, led the MEAC with 352 total kills, 3.63 kills per set and 3.89 points per set in 2021, and she ranks eighth in MEAC history in career kills and fifth in career points. Coleman also ranked eighth in the MEAC in digs per set (3.00) and is one of just two players in the MEAC ranked in both categories.
A Div. I All-America Honorable Mention and All-East Region selection in 2021, Coleman finished the season with 375 kills, nine aces and 27 blocks. She had 18 matches with double-digit kills this past season, and she became the first player in Eagles history with a 20-kill, 20-dig match when she racked up 24 kills and 23 digs in a match against North Carolina Central.
Howard, which shared the regular-season title with Delaware State in 2021 before winning its sixth MEAC tournament championship in the last seven seasons, earned nine first-place votes and racked up 118 points in being named preseason favorite. Delaware State totaled 109 points and four first-place votes to come in second.
Coppin State was third with two first-place votes and 103 points, with North Carolina Central picked to finish fourth with 70 points. Maryland Eastern Shore, Norfolk State (one first-place vote), Morgan State and South Carolina State rounded out the predicted order of finish.
Joining Coleman on the Preseason All-MEAC team were fellow Eagles Paola Caten, Ashley Roman and Ammaarah Williams, Delaware State’s Alondra Maldonado and Howard University’s Bria Woodard and Cimone Woodard.
The 2022 season is set to begin the weekend of Aug. 26-28, with the 2022 MEAC Volleyball Championship taking place in Delaware State University’s Memorial Hall on Nov. 18-20. All eight teams will compete in the championship.
