HARLEM, N.Y. – It is not that difficult to see why team HBCUnited of The Basketball Tournament is doing well this summer as the group is put together of former players from HBCU institutions, including former Spartans Devonte Carter and Derrick Jamerson and led by Norfolk State head men's basketball coach Robert Jones.
Jones is just the second Division I head coach to lead a team into the TBT and the first since 2019.
The No. 4 seed in the region, Jones' squad picked up a win over No. 5 Skip To My Lou, who was coached by former NBA player Rafer Alston, in the first round, 76-72. It marked the first time a team comprised of alumni exclusively from HBCU institutions won a contest in The Basketball Tournament. With little time to rest, HBCUnited took on the top seed in the Rucker Park regional, No. 1 YGC. Carter showed why the team is not to be overlooked with a strong performance and a win, 66-59.
HBCUnited will face off against No. 2 Americana For Autism in the regional final on Wednesday at 8 p.m. from Greg Marius Court at Rucker Park. The game can be seen live on ESPN.
