NORFOLK, Va., May 13, 2022 – No. 3 Norfolk State eliminated No. 6 Coppin State from the 2022 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Softball Championship on Friday morning after a 3-1 win at the Norfolk State University Softball Field.
NSU (34-22) will take on No. 2 Howard at 4 p.m. in today’s second elimination game. The winner will advance to the championship game to face defending MEAC champion Morgan State which will be streamed live on the
MEAC Digital Network on YouTube.
The Spartans picked up a run in the bottom of the first inning when Alison Guckin scored from third on a passed ball. The Eagles answered in the top of the second on an RBI single by Shawnee Ronyak to tie the game at 1-1.
NSU broke the tie on a single to center field from Lilly Potter that scored Kenna Higa. The Spartans added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth inning when Lauren Sheehan scored on a wild pitch.
Guckin, Higa, Potter, Sheehan, Gabby Vaughan and Cam Anderson accounted for NSU’s six hits. Brierra Tyler was the winning pitcher, allowing two hits and one unearned run in seven innings of work.
Ronyak and Melanie Aguilera had CSU’s two hits. Ronyak took the loss for the Eagles after giving up six hits, three runs (one earned) and striking out four batters.
