NORFOLK, Va., May 12, 2022 – The No. 3 Norfolk State Spartans posted a 4-0 win over No. 4 Maryland Eastern Shore to eliminate the Hawks from the 2022 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Softball Championship on Thursday afternoon at the Norfolk State University Softball Field.
Norfolk State (33-22) advances in the loser’s bracket to play No. 6 Coppin State at 12 p.m. on Friday.
Defense was the name of the game for the first four and a half innings as neither team scored, but the Spartans’ bats came alive in the bottom of the fifth when they got three runs on two hits. Alison Guckin hit an RBI double to score Morgan Johnson to get things started. One batter later, Kenna Higa got on base on a fielder’s choice that allowed Guckin to get home safely. Gabby Vaughan then hit a sacrifice fly to let pinch runner Victoria Ruiz score.
NSU tacked on one more run in the bottom of the sixth when Tuli Iosefa walked with the bases loaded.
Guckin, Higa, Johnson, Cam Anderson and Lauren Sheehan each had a hit for NSU. Alexis Robinson improved to 17-4 on the season after pitching a three-hit shutout with two strikeouts.
For Maryland Eastern Shore, Kelsie Ekstrom, Kalyn Sterling and Ah-Nayia Oglesby accounted for the team’s three hits. Saje Kurpiela suffered the loss in a four-run, five-hit effort. She pitched 5.2 innings and struck out five batters.
