NORFOLK, Va., May 12, 2022 – No. 6 Coppin State eliminated No. 5 North Carolina Central from the 2022 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Softball Championship with a 5-3 win on Thursday afternoon at the Norfolk State University Softball Field.
Coppin State (8-37) advances in the loser’s bracket to play a 12 p.m. game on Friday against No. 3 Norfolk State.
Both CSU and NCCU played tough defense to start the game while playing through periods of rain and high wind. After two and a half scoreless innings, NCCU got on the board in the bottom of the third with a two-RBI double to right center field by Madison Mifsud that scored Jaylah Barr and Hailey Batista.
CSU answered in the top of the fourth with an RBI single up the middle by Melanie Aguilera to get on the board. Aguilera advanced to second on a wild pitch by Jaden Davis which forced an NCCU pitching change. Ashanti Eubanks took over in the circle, walking the first batter she faced, then striking out the next one. With two runners on, Jaslyn Sanchez reached on an error that allowed two runs to come in, giving CSU a 3-2 lead.
CSU tacked on two more runs in the top of the fifth inning for a 5-2 advantage.
Play was halted for 54 minutes in the sixth inning due to heavy rains in the area.
Once the game resumed, NCCU got one last run in the bottom of the seventh inning, but it was not enough to outdo CSU.
Vanessa Carrizosa pitched a complete game, allowing five hits and three runs (all earned) for the win. Avianna Peterson finished 2-for-3 with one run, while Aguilera and Alexis Genovese had one hit apiece.
For NCCU, Davis, Batista, Mifsud, Eubanks and Anisa Reynolds each had one hit. Eubanks dropped to 7-12 on the season after giving up two hits and three runs (none earned) in 3.2 innings of work.
